Soldering a Backlight on the MPC3000?

Hello I'm looking to replace my backlight on my MPC3000, I just replaced the backlight on my MPC60 and I had to solder the replacement backlight, my question is; will I need to solder the backlight on the MPC3000? I've read on a different forum that they don't require soldering they snap in/basic connection? Does anyone have experience with this? I order the backlight from MPC-STUFF! Thanks

you need to solder it, but if you did it on a 60 you'll be fine.. if you're unsure, youtube is your friend.

also, its worth nothing that the knock-off EL Foils (backlights) sold by MPC stuff are the incorrect length for the 3000 screen, which while not a major issue, is quite annoying!

I bought a backlight on ebay that doesn't require soldering...I'll post up my thoughts when I finally get around to installing it...

Thanks for the replies, as far as MPC STUFF and their cheap backlights I agree; the old backlight I replaced in my MPC60 was very different in quality and durability' the new backlight had that thin foil crap on the ends which was kinda tough to solder, but I guess everybodys going the cheap route now-aways, I hope the new backlight fits or I will send it back! it should fit fine, and the only downside is a small gap at the edge of the screen - not a huge trade off for being able to once again make beats with the lights off

Nope...the screen on mine is fine- I bought a solder-less backlight for about $30. Haven't installed it yet, and hadn't really heard much about the seller so it's a gamble. I figured it was worth a shot though.

Rohan and I recently opened up an MPC 3000 and laughed our asses off at the hack job that had been done to replace a backlight

The thing you have bought is a replacement backlight that you squeeze in behind the existing backlight without removing it, so that you will have two backlights in the space that one is meant to fit, and instead of a (remarkably easy) solder job, you are instead running a long cable inside your MPC, and unplugging the original backlight connector to connect your new one, and leaving the old connector in circuit but unplugged. A bit dodgy - the MPC we opened up was emitting a high pitching "squealing" sound from the screen which may have been attributed to this (it had lots of other things wrong with it, so im not too sure).

I would recommend learning basic soldering, or getting someone else to install a backlight properly - its really easy, hey, even I can do it - and you would be able to do a "proper" install with the thing you've bought i would think, you'd just need to cut the extra long cable supplied and solder it to the existing connection in your MPC 3000.

Thanks for clearing this up, we really had no idea why someone would do such a thing, but it makes sense now - to avoid soldering.

I didn't say it wasn't a gamble! $30 looked better to me than the $60 tag on Mpc-stuff's so I bit...this one does replace the old one though, as it is removed to install the new one.

oh ok - well whoever installed the one I saw didnt realise that and had them both wedged in there together!

haha yeah I can imagine that would look pretty bad...I didn't even know you could fit two in there?? I guess people will try anything...

I'll post up my findings on this one when I have time to install it...hopefully it's not bad, as buying two for the price of one, and stashing one away sounds good to me

I too need a good working backlight badly as the screen is really tough on my eyes...
need a bright table lamp pointed on it all the time ----- annoying

I got a El-Foil from MIDI raket.de for my S950 sampler ...installed it, pulled the old one out ...
well, actually i had to dismantle the whole screen to take the old one out as it was glued to the back of the screen..... --- it was a pretty scary thing to do --- donno how i manage to put the screen back together again -
but the new El-Foil didn't worked at all... - guess the inverter gone bad on my S950 ..?


After that experience with S950 , i am unsure on what to do with my MPC3000LE dark screen -
should i order from MIDI-Raket.de again , or get the Foil somewhere else?
Will i have to go trough ripping the whole screen apart again in order to get the old backlight out -
or will it "easily slide out" as some backlight sellers proclaim ?

Was the old backlight on your MPC3000 's glued to the screen or not - how did you guys managed
to get it out?

It should just slide out...I've never heard of them being glued in before...

hopefully not on MPC3000's
but on my S950 it was impossible to slide it out
so i dismantled the display and saw that it was glued with a softer glue like
they use on stickers ( rubber maybe?)
it was a hell to assemble the display back correctly
had to do it twice to get rid of dissapearing letters

ah...yeah I'm not sure about the 950's, but all the instructions I've seen on the 3000's show them sliding out.

Can anyone verify if 950's are supposed to do that?
