Thats true, but 100% quantized does not sound real or groovy, so you need some off beat. Just a lil bit, but that makes the different.

the purpose of turning off quantize is to make it sound human.. not to make it sound like you cant stay on beat for shit... i never understood why people who dont quantize think automatically their beats are better.. drummers dont sloppily slap snares around for swing.. the swing is it naturally being not perfectly timed.. some people dont quantize hats, but ive seen people completely **** off their hats and say "its supposed to be like that, it feels real" no that shits just off cause you cant stay on tempo...

this is getting deep!

so one one hand things cant be as tight as say... techno or pop music but they can still have a human feel if not precisely played on point... just dont get carried away...

i think the off beat joints is a way of going against both ideologies... kinda like these homo thug skinny jean dudes... they are trying to find a way between man and b**ch but u cant... u really just cant... or cain't

Let me chime in here. That style is a matter of preference. And it all depends on your frame of reference. What do I mean? Reference in time. Technically it's not off beat. It may sound off beat to some because their frame of reference for the snare is on the 2 and 4. The only thing that really matters is the 1 dropping on beat everytime. As long as everything meets back at the one then everything else has room to play. This is why some drummers sound funkier that others. They play with time. Check out Dennis Chambers. A sequencer will always come back to the 1 so there is not the danger that a real drummer would have coming back to the top. This technique can sound exaggerated because a sequencer is being used but like I said as long as there is a defined1, then technically it's not off beat. Purely a matter of taste though. Music has rules but then again it doesn't.

drums should sound like they in the pocket hence the use of swing sometimes depending on the sample or vibe of the track u will need to place a drum hit or hat in a place outside where the quantize shifts the notes hence turning it off to have total freedom.

but this is one of those things that nerds have mis interpreted from reading interviews with their idols, dilla, doom and madlib.

they can turn off quantize cos they know music and have been doing beats from years, they also have a good sense of rhythm and timing.

but a geek who just started beats last week and has two left feet reads the interview and his mental blinders misses the context in which these guys are saying the dont use quantize.

but there is defo a movement of peeps that like to be left field/experimental on purpose claiming that they push the boundary's but really they wack.

True dat. There are those they know the rules and where they can be bent or even broken. Therefore they know how, when and why to apply said technique. Then there are those that throw cow dung at a wall and say, " look, it's art!"

Yeah, it's obvious that everybody that indulges in this technique don't know the ins & outs. It's like someone trying to pull off a remodeling job but don't have the know how or the experience.

Chances are...the end result is going to look wack as sh!t. The same goes with having the skillset to program drums so that they're convincing enough to not even think about anything being off, even if it is.

the drums are wack as ****

sounds like the drums are in time but the bassline is way different. kind of like how the kick will knock even more if u have bass hits at the same time>>>here it's like the bass and kick are clashing and that makes it hard to nod your head to.

Don't tell Thelonius Monk that!

What nonsense.

I don't quantize. I use tempo and time. I play my drum patern for 24 bars until my brain quantizes my Internal pendulum and I have natural swing and flow that can circle around back on the one. I don't really make beats .. I make music. If you spend 6-8 hours playing 24 bars, just beasting the ish outta it, the end result will reflect the time and devotion you inject into your expressive rythim. The long way is always the short way in the end. Drummers, guitarist ,bass and pianists all use a fundamental internal quantize that has natural flow and feel ending and beginning at the same place thus there is no 1. Just rhythmic harmony that makes since. If you have to try your not making sence. The brain is two dimensional. It's right our wrong. The soul just knows what feels right or wrong. Listen to your soul.... get at me. ONE.....

Not quite that simple. Kinda like how Monk played all kinda "wrong" notes but somehow they just sounded right. There is a method to the madness. Just can't go hitting wrong notes and think your Monk. You gotta know why your doing something and then how to implement it. Same goes for drum tracks. If you have good timing, the effect can be done without quantize.
