any of you say use vista and find that pro tools doesnt run so smoothley on it? and decided to use VM ware to run XP on a vista computer. if so , can u give your imput on how it runs? would be better to switch over? windows & and vista suck when it comes to stability. XP worked like a charm. would thi sbe a good idea to use VM ware to run xp and install ptools on it?

Im not sure why you'd have to use vm ware. Ive just sorted my laptop to dual boot between vista and xp , cause i needed to go back to some old tracks on cubase that wouldnt run properly on vista.

I used this tutorial :
http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vist ... _guide.htm

I used the easy bcd software version 1.7.2 to sort out the bootloaders as it shows in the tutorial cause the screenshots are different in the newer version and i wasnt totally sure how to do the same stuff! It pays it to read it though a few times first and make sure you have everything you need (xp drivers for you laptop, install disks etc).My laptop didnt come with a vista install disk but my friend had one that i had to use to do a start up repair at one point.

Also i dont use pro tools - so i dont know whether your problems are vista specific or whether you havent got something set up right or whatever. If other people use pro tools on vista smoothly it might be worth checking that out before you start installing operating systems

thats dope!
yea its just that pro tools crashes/freezes alot on vista.. i use the same version and plugins on a mac in another studio and it works flawlessly.my vista always crashes when on pro tools even when making the simplest automation.. such as added a few of the same plug ins itl give me an error message which shouldnt happn!

hows everything on your dual boot? is it laggy? do ur programs run smoothly? plug ins track count etc.. details bro! lol would be incredibly helpful.. appreciate it

My problem was using cubase se on vista. Some simple tasks (e.g. selecting a track!) would freeze the computer - even without loads of plug-ins loaded up. When I boot up in xp i don't have the same problems, it works like it did on my old xp desktop , with the added bonus that ive got a faster processor and more ram so i can use more plug ins. Your limits with plug ins and latency should be the same as any xp computer with the same spec.
I have 4gb of ram in my machine, but xp will only see 3gb. For most programs vista works really well for me, i use Reaper mainly for new productions and it's fantastic. Its just when i want to load up old cubase projects that i use xp.

I found this comaptibility chart which shows which versions of pro tools le work on vista.

http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfser ... cId=353241

My Cubase was the last version of SE and it was made before vista came out - hence the problems - the newer ones are meant to work, but i didnt want to pay for a new one cause reaper suited me better for workflow and cashflow! If it doesnt cost you much to upgrade then could do that instead.

serious don't run it in vmware, you latency will suck. i work with vmware day in day out, ESX/ESXi and workstation and trust me don't do it. I can't really be bothered with a technical explanation on CPU exceptions, but your seriously wasting your computer doing it.

u want a bit more than 2gb's. I normally make minimum 20gb for system partitions.

if your using vmware workstation look into shared folders, then you can map folders from the hard disk of your physical machine to appear as a mapped drive inside the virtual machine

i made a 100gb partition drive from the C which was (300gb).. now i burned the iso on a cd via burnIMG software. and booted from the disk.. as we speak it is formating the NEW partitioned hardrive first

oh okay cool you going dual boot?

100gb is fine, I don't install anything on that partition other than programs and windows, if you got a 100gb spare thats fine.

edit: just to confirm, you've got Vista installed and your adding a windows xp installation dual boot not vmware.

i think the windows xp install may mess up your vista boot sector, (it might not)

this should help

Yes it does mess with the boot sector - the tutorial that i linked to includes a bit using the easy bcd software to restore the boot sector.

I used quite a small partition on mine, but i used tiny xp which is version of xp without all the stuff you dont really need. (Its not strictly legit though) My audio files are in another partition which is accessible from both xp and vista.

you might also need to change the hard drive settings in the bios xp doesnt work with the sata settings.

yeh its best to turn to to sata to compatibility to do the install, if you can its worth installing the AHCI drivers once xp is installed and switch the the sata mode back to AHCI. some of our machines at work required loads of manual registry hacking to get the driver installed though.
