Hmm. I see we can crossfade between layers, but the manual mentions nothing about keygroup crossfades.

So, how come when you select a keygroup program name and hit WINDOW, there is clearly an option that allows you to set 'Keygroup crossfade: ON'?

Great I thought - however, it does nothing. In fact, if you select a new keygroup in that program, and then return to the keygroup crossfade setting, it's gone back to OFF.

Okay, so maybe this isn't a program wide setting, it needs to be applied individually to each keygroup? Nope, no matter what you do, changing keygroup just keeps resetting this to OFF.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I just loaded a S1000/S3000 PGM from my NiceBytes collection and when I changed the value to ON it stayed ON.
Also if I go down to the LAYER and do an OPEN WINDOW the CROSSFADE is set to ON for the LAYER.

Are you talking about the master 'keygroup crossfade' setting in program name> WINDOW? Does it stay on if you change keygroup?

Yes and it stayed changed to ON.
However you still hear no disitnguishing difference between the 2 settings.

Not sure if it's there to address some aspect of the capabilities of the S-1k/3k format or what???

Funny if Akai says that CrossFade in the Layer level use 2 voices, wouldn't that also in theory allow some real potential problems with that Global CrossFade depending on how many Layers were a Keygroup and how you were playing?

May actually be a dummy field that has no real user control. ???
