Does anyone know it it is possible to load MPC5000 sequences and programs into a 1000, or are the files incompatible? I know that the 1000 can load 5000 .all files, but not sure about the others....

MPC5000 programs won't load, i.e. 50s, 50k etc. So you'll have to re-save them in your 5000 as MPC1000 PGM format which is the option on the save screen.

Not tried 5000 all files in a 1000, but in theory it should work. MIDI files seem reasonably backward compatible, but I have noticed issues loading 5000 MIDI files on the 2000XL, where some pad event data is randomly replaced with midi exclusive messages.

I'll see if I can try some backward compatibility tests later.

Thank you very much! I will try this tomorrow. I have an important concert and would like to use an MPC1000 as a safety backup for my MPC5000. Really appreciate your help, it would be great to have backwards compatibility, it's a bit to expensive to buy 2 '5000's just for a backup machine.

Sell your 1k and get a decent external HD for backup, that's the way i do it i just copy my whole HD to an Ext. HD
Unless you really don't want to get rid of your 1k ofcourse but i think an ext. HD is a much faster and easier way though.

plussss you will even remain some money of your sold 1k, how about that :)

???
He was talking about using the 1k to play if something went wrong with the 5k.
Thus the reason he wanted to be able to load the 5k files into the 1k.

Absolutely. I did world tours for years with two MPC 60's, then when they finally died, a pair of 2000XL's which were nowhere near as good for stage use as the 60's because of the lag when you hit the play button on the 2000. We had to put a double length count-off on each song, and the small display and control layout were really disappointing.

So, being used to always having a backup, I wanted a spare sequencer, as I don't trust modern switch mode power supplies in mission critical situations.
