Do you prefer a good loop, or good chops?

both on asr 10 i would just leave the loop alone ,on the mpc i find myself chopping more then i did before.

For me personally I rarely ever loop if I do theres other things going on it. I prefer making beats that is impossible for any one else to make. Which means no one will be able to piece the 5 records that I found that night and chopped.

There is a level of satisfaction I get when I flip a few records that have no relation to each other and make a fresh beat that has its own sound.

I myself have been trying to push my sampling to new boundaries. In return my quantity is low(maybe a beat a week to two weeks) but I believe Im creating a distinct sound that separates myself.

But everybody has a method to their flavor so do your own thing

Yep dude... i guess thats actually the way 'it should be done'.
I'm more and more trying to blend several sample sources, not just chopping one sample. However i've a hard time finding matching samples & stuff. Most of the times i find 2 dope samples that i consider would match fine, but i cant get it in tune. Any tuning-tips from you concerning this topic? i find myself controlling the semi-tones over and over but mostly it just doesn't work.

Sampling from a turntable with pitch control helps get everything in key. Also, CD decks with +/- 100% pitch and loop controls can lead to some amazing 'happy accidents' when looking for sounds.

I have a book where I write where all my drum breaks are and samples. I also got a section where any time I hear something and it sounds very similar to another song that I can think of ill write it down.

Theres times where even for video game music that the track will be a version of a real song.

Some times the tuning doesn't work and I must dig through many records. Also depending on the sample I usually like to change some of the individual chops tune. You can keep stuff in key and still raise the tune of the chop by 10, 20 or 30 sometimes and take another sample and match the tune and from their you can create a whole new sound.

Oooh yeah, I love accidents.

I do whatever is called for. Sometimes I'll loop and it can be dope. Sometimes the loop sounds so good, that when you lace some drums on it, it sounds off and horrible so I chop it up and make it fit by all means possible. Sometimes I chop everything and blend it all together to make a collage of funky mud.

Most cases though, I dig for the dope and obscure loop. Thats the first step for me, everything else is Plan B.
