make sound fat

hi, I'm new in these forums, and I love discussion going on here, I've took very good advices!

first, my setup:
- 950
- mpc 500
- cubase 5

and now, the question! now I sample in the 950, then record in the computer, and via usb put samples in the mpc. I love the sound of 950, it's just the sound I like to have, but I'd like to make my samples, in particular drums, more fat before putting them in the mpc.

how can I make this? Do I have to use some hardware betwenn the 950 and the computer, or I can use some software with good effects?

oh, I'd like to have that 90's sound... I have to say it?!?

compression is the only thing i can think of for making your sounds sound big.

as far as that 90's sound.....i really dont know. maybe get you a tape reel or multitrack from that era and record your finished beats into that.

I dont know how much sampletime the s950 has, but maybe you could record your entire finished beats into it.

leaving your samples in the 950 will give them a better sound. use your 500 as a sequncer.

I've already tried to leave samples in the 950 and then sequence them with the mpc, but I don't want to mess with floppy, I prefer load drums and samples from the mpc, for me it's a better work flow.

and yes, I'm thinking about compression, but effects in cubase don't seem work in the way I search.. and so I figured out that hardware compressor would be better, anyone use hardware stuff to pump samples before putting them in the mpc? or the price for a good hardware comprsssor is too much?

I've witnessed some dope compression in pro-tools. I say that to say that software can produce some dope results if you tweak it correctly

Compression is not really needed for all it does is box up your sound. Hence, the word compression.

Can't you just make the beat in the MPC and record it in the 950? It'll definitely give you that crunch, then in Cubase you EQ and beef it up to your liking.

Maybe put ur mpc thru the s950 and then put the outputs of the s950 in to ur computer, that will at least give you the sound of the convertors. I do not think a s950 can sample an entire beat.

i don't make the world's fattest beats. it's not really what i'm trying to do.

but i think you could pro'lly fatten up the stuff on yr computer with standard fx.

you can do a lot with EQ'ing, double-tracking and panning.

like roll off ALL high end from the bass, kick, etc, add that to another copy of the same loop (or whatevs). pan layers of stuff to give it sonic space, then thicken it. sub a sine wave under stuff. tune things differently. then dump to 500.

or you could also sample s950 --> pc: mess w/ vst --> back to s950 --> directly to 500. that way yr getting duplicate s950 action.

but you want the sound, you gotta work for it ya know?

that's a good idea, 950 hasn't too much memory for record an entire beat, but record only a loop is possible, so I can make various part of my beat in the mpc and then record them in the 950... great idea!!

are you layering yr samples on the 500?

cuz that alone can fatten fings up.
