Dynamic EQs are the business!!

So, i've recently been experimenting with multi-band compression which is brilliant, and the other day i read something about dynamic EQs.
Basically you set a threshold and you can cut or boost a frequency when it hits a certain level, and you can set the attack and release of the boost/cut (like a de-esser).
You can use it to boost the kick drum of a mix without affecting the rest of it!!
A very high-tech precision tool. So i thought, this is gonna be perfect for eqing drum hits in a break (kick snare BOOM BAP).

I've been trying to figure out for ages how to tighten and fatten up drums low nd without affecting the overall sound, say you boost a snare at 200hz, then the decay of said snare will be muddy. I'd usually chop the snare tightly, but then it sounds artificial and loses its character.

I downloaded a demo of BRAINWORX DynEQ, and i gotta tell you its amazing!!
I had a feeling that aswell as transient shapers, dynamic EQs gotta be a mix engineers secret weapon. After searching forums (here and gearslutz), i've found little mention of them, and am quite surprised). Maybe some use multiband compressors in the same way, i dunno.

So, this is a tip from me, get a dynamic EQ (DynEQ being the one i've tried), its the best plugin i've tried in years, and does exactly what i needed. The trick is to boost the kick/snare low ends and set the attack at zero and release time as tightly as possible, you can even solo the frequency your effecting for even more precision! Couldn't recommend it more. Do yourself a favour and try one out.

Does anyone here use one? I'm curious.

Use them all the time! Great plugins. Their Boost plugin is amazing on kickdrums. And the DynEQ is indeed a very good plugin. I was never happy with virtual sidechaining compressors, but with DynEQ icw match EQ plugs I get very good results in the lower frequenties now. The kickdrum is realy coming trough that bass now.

I also recommend them next to the Sony plugs.

Coinop! is the boost plugin you mention 'boom', i tried that also, brilliant stuff.
Never heard of brainworx until Thursday and they're already one of my favourite plug-in companies.

Its refreshing to see one making eqs that are extremely forward thinking, modern and high-tech and not just trying to recreate vintage Neve or SSL gear.
I think Dyneq is definitely gonna be my go to plugin for drums, its genius.

Yes, I ment the Boom plugin. It's magic on the lower frequenties.


ps. About that sidechaining comment I made; With the Logic plugin comps you do get good sidechaining results. Unfortunatly I use Windows.

I use izotope ozone 4. Better than anything out there. Hands down. Read up on that bad boy and wipe the drool....

Never liked it because of it complexity.

Ozone is great, i've read Just Blaze swears by it for mastering. I haven't really delved into it myself yet, just checked out some presets.

I gave Izotope Alloy a shot the other day, very similar to Ozone, but more for mixing. If you like Ozone check it out, i think these two together would be a deadly combination.
