Second Studio Monitors

Can some of you experts help me out with your advice?

Currently I am using a pair of M-Audio Studiophile BX5a studio monitors. They are nice and flat. They might give me a reference to what a song would sound like playing through a small stereo system.

I would like to get a second pair of studio monitors. My preference is they have deeper bass, greater fidelity, and can give me a sounds that a nice home stereo system or nice car stereo might have.

Using something like the Mackie Big Knob, I can switch between the two sets of monitors.

What do you experts recommend I use for a second set of studio monitors? And please explain why!

something with a bigger cone. 8" minimum

Without mentioning your budget, i am going to assume since you have bx5as as your main monitors that your on a budget (no disrepect, who isnt on a budget!) Get Event 20/20 or TR8s. Super cheap, hold the re sell value and sound great!

this is actually a good thread idea. Yeah I think a different size monitor would be great plan...


I dont have these my own self, but often around here you see people suggesting the yamaha 8" (is it HS80?) the ones they tried making them look like NS10s with the white cones.. hahaha. Anyways people seem to like those. I personally haven't listened to the 8" ones.

Well it definitely sounds like I need to set my sights on eight inch drivers.

I was in Guitar Center a while back listening to both the Yamaha and the Advents (not sure which exact model). For the life of me I cannot recall which one sounded better, but they were both a huge step up from these little Audiophile BX5a's.

The KRK Rocket 8's have always seemed to be popular, but if I recall both the Yamaha and the Advents put the Rocket 8's to shame.

What do you guys think about Rocket 8 vs. Yamaha vs. Advent? Is Rocket 8 even in the same class?

Okay keep in mind this is me personally... some people love the rockit series of KRKs.... but I wasn't a huge fan of them. I did a side by side of the rockit series with a few other speakers like 2 years ago and I found them not quite as good as some others.

JBL LSR4328P ..$1500.00 a pair and the top of diminishing return value. The next level of bang for buck is in the $2200.00 range. These are in my opinion are the best you can get without spending thousands...

Lol...$1500.00 is not thousands..its 1 thousand 5 hundred. And that was my point. The best at under 2k range is the JBL LSR series. after that your spending at least $2500.00 before tax to sound better. and wow..48k Lmfao.. bet they sound sweet. Have you heard them before? Plus the op never said, " hey I'm a cheap suck" and want to make bangers like Dr.dre And Scott storch with a limited budget. I didn't want to recommend crap. my reputation is solid so is my word.

I have not heard those, I would suspect once you get into the 50 grand a piece (not for a pair) range you get speakers custom built for your room.. hahaha cause man that is a total kick in the wallet. you gotta be making cash like crazy to buy speakers that cost what some houses cost. That store doesn't even have those in stock.... lol I doubt they can afford the insurance to keep those at the shop.

Yeah I dont disagree with your suggestion though...

Adding another set of monitors to a poor sounding room is silly. Unless of course you know the nuances of your room inside out and can compensate.

Maybe you could consider a sub to improve bass response? Although what I said above still applies.

I personally favour Genelec monitors, the 8030 and above seem to have very good bass response for their size. Reasonably good translation onto other systems. Wouldn't say they were perfect, but I'm used to them and I think that makes a huge difference. Excellent depth to them, every detail is audible, which can be an advantage, and for the size the volume is pretty staggering, although I'm not a fan of pushing them too hard.

You should probably check out some of the mid-range Dynaudio monitors too, as they get consistently good reviews. As do things like the Mackie HR series, which are also noted for a paticularly good bass response.

but as far as cheap shit goes, I can vouch for 20/20's dopedee talked me into them glad he did, got mine for 250 of craigslist, I almost ended up with maduio bx8's....
