what effects to use on snares?

What effects do u use on snares to make them thicker and what effects do use to make them thinner or not so thick.

more of an EQ thing than an effects thing

sometimes I'll use a small reverb
it depends on the snare I use

Depending on the snare I take it and layer it with the same snare and pitch one either up or down and eq it to give it an effect

One weird thing I've done is to timestretch a snare just a few percent to make it last a tiny bit longer, which can make it sound "thicker."

compression, eq, distortion usually. Sometimes an extremely short reverb.

Depends on what your going for

When I want some Room sound on my Snare go for verb

If the snare I have at the moment is good it just needs some adjusting EQ will solve it

Compression for punch

Layering if Im going for a sound that I already know Im not going to get by using the FX, cause I used it so much I have a pretty good idea of what I can do to the sound ahead of time

Remember FX are good, but its better to just get better drum sounds

reverb is usually the one I go for but it can change the feel of your song if it's too long. Use it subtly and it will sound good with a bit of compression.
It just adds a bit of depth to it's position in the mix.

dont be afriad to stick an eq on a reverb ( i typically roll off low end) or stick a gate on it eitherr

i compress the s*** out of it, and overdrive the mixer channel tht it is on, pack on a long tail reverb, then set the attck time of the gate fast, so it is chopped basically.

i stick with eq. and layering

I dont like to use compression alot, cause I like the natural feel of the original snare i sample. And sometimes that punchy ness stands out too much for the beat.....guess it depends on what beat it is.

use filters too.....like when i sample off my mophatt.

so i guess im more into sampling a good one the first time.

layer filtered ones over original sample.

Of course it depends on what type of beat you're doing, but things like reverb and EQ'ing to make your snares sound thicker are definetely things I would do.

I also like to layer i.e. tamborines over my snares to make em sound more lively.
