Hey guys. I just got an MPC 1000 and I am completely new to music. I mean, I know nothing. I don't understand a lot of the functions that the MPC manual is trying to explain as a lot of the words are new to me.

i.e. Measures, tempo, ring modulator, 1/8, 1/16, ticks, triplets, swing, just to name a few.

I would really like to start from the ground up by finding a book or something that explains all of this stuff.

Any recommendations?

I've been sitting behind this MPC for several hours trying to fool myself that I have a clue.

Some of it can be found through this wiki link. Not everything is found here. Like it was stated before, gather knowledge from different sources and take it from there.

I feel sorry for u since u bought a MPC when u have no music knowledge. IMO MPC is too complicated for ppl who doesnt know much of beatmaking.

U should try out fruity loops so u can get a better view of beatmaking and the terms you are looking for. Not to sound cheap but u can download it from a site somewhere. Just search for Fruity loops.
I tell you, u will find it hard to make beats if u just jump right into your MPC without knowing anything. Just take my advice and u will understand in the future what im saying. If your not taking my advice, then all i have to say is Good luck.

This is a GREAT place to start. You wont find one source for everything but this is the closest you'll get. Once you get a few of the basics, things start falling into place.

Very informative site, appreciate it very much!

Thanks for the input. I realized before buying the MPC that it wouldn't exactly be a walk in the park. I'm determined, however, to use this as the primary tool for getting myself into music.

I've been looking at some drumming tutorials and they have been a load of help in terms of helping me build a basic foundation to build beats on. Looks like a slow start, but definitely getting somewhere.

Thanks for the help guys
