100 - 500 what?
You don't say which country you are in.

Don't mean to be too pedantic but it makes a difference.

The sm58 is without question an all around all purpose mic. It's bullseye is live performance or the stage so to speak. It's also considered as being a dynamic cardioid mic as opposed to a condenser mic which picks up a more clearer & detailed sound.

Both types will shine brighter when coupled with a good mic pre like scoob suggested.

I prefer to work with AT (audio technica) 40 & 30 series mics for my vocal needs.

I'd say Dab was better qualified to give you advice on that, although the old addage of buy cheap, buy twice I imagine is applicable here. I personally have no real experience with standalone mic pre's because my soundcard (Mackie Onyx 400f) has some excellent Onyx preamps built into it which I've always found to be rather nice.
