hiphop sampling

hi all,

how would u go to find a suitable song for hhop sampling? i know most sample from jazz/soul/blues genre but where and how do u get those samples? as u can imagine i'm a beginner , . thx

for beginners, you could try using youtube as a reference. ie, searching for "hip hop samples" or "oldies, blues,soul" etc. Obviously, the samples on youtube have been ripped several times so beware of what you cut up. to me, its a matter of POV on a sample (look "Circulate" by J.Dilla vS 9th Wonder's "Let The Dollar Circulate" 2 different versions of the same song by Billy Paul)

you could also go to a record store (not sure if you have a record player) and just jot down names and groups for reference. heck, you not want to delve into the blues/jazz/soul like most producers start off (imo), and go into a totally different genre of music..sampling is cool but playing your own music is special

some producers can flip a sample so well that when they re-arrange it, it sounds like a totally different sound/genre than what the next guy would go after...it really takes a great ear (an art) to do this (a la Dilla, Madlib, Kanye, Flying Lotus, etc)

Honestly theres no real rules for what would qualify as an appropriate record to sample. If you want just a general idea though check out http://www.the-breaks.com/....this lists what people have used in the past. It'll give you an idea of what types of sounds are achieved by the records sampled.


Just remember at the end of the day...no rules. Sample ANYTHING if you can flip it.

thank you Pound, im going to check out the-breaks too..i have an extensive library of samples (zounds of genres) and i firmly believe that there is NO "enough" when it comes to producing, and music in general

Dont take this the wrong way but I hate hate how people are like how to make beats what should I do? Do what "You want to". Dont follow the rules. Everyone on youtube who samples soul and R&B make the same beats. Anything that has a beat can be rapped on. Ive made beats outta country, to noise found in my house.

Thanks man, i'd love to play my own music then sampling, the problem is finding the right "sounds". u could spend some more money for sound packages, which 'll be a real waste of money.

dig for some vinyl records in your local record stores and thrift shops... you'll surely find some great sounds to sample

no disrespect, but why banned? its not THAT a big deal for me to lay in my 25 cents. aren't forums here to post ideas and help each other out?

no biggie. i just find it funny when people get so offended and/or annoyed when people ask "stupid questions".

I'm new here. How do you guys feel about using sounds from loop libraries? I've heard people do very ineteresting things by combining chopped up loops.

why don't you start out on the right foot and not sample and make original stuff, it's alot easier plus you dont have to steal
