I tried to source a part for ages but couldn't get hold of one and ended up sending it to Akai / Numark for a repair. £5 + labour charges. Would have liked to have done it myself but glad it's sorted and they turned it around pretty quickly from estimate to delivery back to me.
There have been a few posts from people experimenting with various rotary encoders due to a lack of stock of the officially endorsed ones. I just wanted it fixed quickly and decided to err on the side of caution. I'm still interested to see whether anyone comes up with a good fix themselves though.

It'd be nice if someone could mod it to be smoother with less of the awful clacking sound.

Thanks for the info, lucky You. I just wrote a quest to numark technical service at my country, but I highly doubt they will do such a repair. On a side note, last time I asked two dealers based in Taiwan which claimed they got 100's of those encoders, one man wrote me back they don't!! and the other that is not available.. quote: "in WHOLE CHINA"..

I'm in Australia, still using an old blue MPC1000 that I bought back in 2003 or something. Had heaps of probs (like lots of other people, chur!) including pad upgrade (now with red pads), replaced heaps of buttons. Installed the harddrive a few years back too. Unit is just starting to show signs of rust... but I plan on sanding it back and chroming it up in due course! My current problem is with the jog/scroll/data wheel... helping somebody could help (please).
I have the same issues as mentioned above ^ including erratic behaviour (of the jog wheel, moreso than the user!!). I want to replace it, but the actual encoder has been out of stock at mpcstuff.com for a long while now. Given that they are selling the encoder for $11 or something, I am a little unwilling to pay $60 to replace the whole right hand side PCB instead. Was wondering if anybody had any suggestions for sourcing scroll wheel encoders anywhere else??
