JJOS 3.12 MPC1000 pad 'stutter'

Hi, newb here with what may be a stupid question.....I've tried searching here for the answer, but 'MPC1000 pad problems' brings up almost 7000 matches and it's not in the FAQ's, so any help gratefully received.

I've just bought a used black MPC1000 (UPC code MPC1000BK). The seller also gave me the receipt from when he purchased it new in June 2009. Following what seems to be unanimous advice, before using it I installed JJOS 3.12 (the newest free version).

When I use the pads, especially when I'm holding them down, but also just when I'm hitting them to trigger a sample, I find that the sample is being multiply triggered and makes a stuttering type of sound (as if the pad was being hit multiple times, but it stutters too quickly for me to actually be doing that). I've tried playing with the pad sensitivity functions, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. Googling the problem, it appears that this *may* be confined to the free versions of JJOS but I can't be sure. So:

- is this a common problem and is there a way to fix it (preferably free)?

- I'm assuming that my MPC has the new pads, so it can't beold-style knackered pads causing the problem. IS this likely to be correct?

I will probably end up getting one of the pad-for JJOS versions, but I have the MPC-Tutor tutorials that are designed for the free version so I'd rather stick with that for now.

Are you playing it on a firm surface? Someone reported similar behaviour due to having their mpc on a cushion!

You can tell if you have new pads by wiggling a corner pad - if the adjacent pads move you have new ones, which are a single rubber sheet. The old pads were 16 individual rubber pads

The different OS versions are not so different that Tutor's guide wouldn't apply, but you can always install another OS version without a password to see if the stutter goes away, and then reinstall the free OS again

If your pad on level is set at 1 try to to raise its value. That could help.

sounds like you have the old pads to me. i had a similar problem with mine before i upgraded to the new ones.

If it was purchased newin 2009, I doubt it has the old fault-prone pads. I bought mine new in nov 07, right around the time akai rolled out th pad fix. Could be that the original purchaser got an old stock unit so it's worth looking into.

If you do have the new style pads, a great sensitivity enhancement would be cutting some card stock into little squares and taping them to the pad sensor board. There's a gap between the pads and the sensor board. This will not necessarily fix the double triggering problem however.

If you're an Mpc newbie, I'd suggest you fine tune your playing style (tap and lift). The new style 1k pads (which incidentally should be called the old style, as it's essentially the same pad/sensor design they've used since the original mpc60. In fact the 1k is the first an only mpc to stray from that pad design) are easy to double trigger, and it's not really a hardware or software problem, it's a design limitation.

Many thanks for the tips everyone. I've figured out that my unit definitely has the 'good' pads , and increasing the 'pad on' level seems to have helped massively. So I'm a happy man now. So on to the next tutorial.....

You have the old pads, sorry, if it was the new pads it would say MPC1000BK-N

still, I have them too and I don't have this problem. My Velocity settings are diff for each pad, pads 1, and 2 with the highest sensitivity cause they are the most worn out.

Tinker with the "level on" setting till it gets better.

this is not true.
my 1000 says MPC1000BK and it came with the new pads.

Well, when I wiggle the corner pads the adjacent ones move a little bit so it seems (going by the information posted here) that the 'new' pads are most likely. All pads now seem to work without any triggering problems for one-shot hits, although one of them is still causing problems when I hold it down (and when I release it). I suspect some of it is also down to noob technique as well. Hopefully I should be able to work around this Thanks again everyone.
