Ok...one thing i always struggled with is how to chop up my samples...im sure some will say 'whatever u feel' or 'whatever sounds nice'...doesnt help newbies tho much does it?...people always seem to ask on here and various other forums too...plus reading a response from someone who is comfortable with it is not always the best way to learn...so i had an idea...upload a couple of samplicious tracks and people can download them chop em in their own style and reupload the chops as a zip, a loop they made from their chops or even a program file for the mpc...hopefully this will help cats who are new to producing or even give new ideas to some veterans...the tracks are...1) the whispers - chocolate girl...2) st. tropez - belle de jour... 3) henry macini - the thief...

very decent samples dude! 8)

with all three of those i would chop by note/drum hit, pretty much the way i chop every sample i use. in sections under 64 chops obviously, i use a 2500 w/jjos1.

i also like to time stretch the sections first in logic's soundtrack pro(mac) if the sample/tempo needs a bit more to play with.

hope that helps
peace

When you say you like to time stretch the sections first in soundtrack, are you referring to the section of the sample as a whole before you chop, or the individual chops you have made.

Never tried stretching in Soundtrack, would be interested to know more... :P

well i don't like to stretch the whole song, and definitely not the chops as that would be very time consuming and tedious. i try to stretch as little as possible these days as i used to stretch to much.

sometimes you don't know you need to stretch until after chopping, but usually i can tell.

soundtrack pro is the best i've found for stretching on the mac. sometimes i still use cool edit in parallels, but thats only if i'm trying to get rid of hiss or crackle as well.
cool edit pro is really good for that imo and the stretching on it is fairly decent.

The one thing i could use some advice with which i still have yet to find the most practical way around is individual chop timing.

Say you sample some real classic stuff, before the time of metronomes and quantize lol. You chop accurately on the kicks and snares for example, but when piecing back together it doesn't fit properly in quantize because of the inevitable slip in and out of timing of the original record.

Yours or anyone elses advice as to the most practical and quality solution would be amazingly helpful to me, and others im sure :)

^^^^ yo padlock, do you find the timestretching in soundtrack pro to be better than the timestretching in logic? whenever i stretch my stuff nowadays, i just use the option click +drag in logic to the grid of the tempo, but sometimes it creates too many artifacts.

i was thinkin about getting a time stretching program like izotopes timestretch, but i have soundtrack pro, just never really used it.

its pretty much a 2 track audio editor like soundforge isnt it?

and @ glydez

whenever i chop something, first off, i find the tempo of the song (in logic) (or somewhere close to a bar or 2 at least)

then i cut my peices into 1/4 notes first, so there ends up being 4 peices that fit in a bar, or if a little goes over or under, i will start from the first peice, and fit it to the 1/4 note of the grid in logic, then take the second chop i made, put it into the second 1/4 note of the grid, and the third one and 4th one.

so at the end i will have one bar with my desired tempo, and each individual quarter note is chopped and stretched out to the grid.

then after that, i will chop that in half, then chop it in half again to get 8th notes and 16th notes if need be.

but i will usually make my 8th notes and 16th notes chops before i timestretch them if i can.

the key is to find the tempo of the song first though, so when you make your initial chops: quarter, 8th, 16th, 32nd

you can have the grid markers of your DAW to work off of then just stretch each chop to fit into that space.

and thanks for the samples mang, im gonna listen to them now.

if you need any more help, just ask.

Good ear dude. You definitely found some hot tracks.I'll have to chop them up and get back to you later. But usually what i do is load all my samples into Soundforge and then load them into the MPC.And like jacpot said a few years back........chop small.

Peace.

All those songs have been sampled on major label rap albums, KappNeffect's post is only the tip of the iceberg. Not a lot of "finding" or legwork involved here.

As for how I'd chop, 1/4 notes is indeed a good starting point. You don't end up with an overly choppy sounding beat, yet you still have room to give it your own flavor.
