is there a way to record free-play.. instead of in two, 4 counts.

Oh, read your sig huh? I'm suppose to read and pay attention to a sig but you can't crack open manual and figure it out in 10 seconds.

Well, to answer your question, yes you can record an entire performance in one pass.

well i dont have this manual u speak of. i was hoping someone could tell me what settings to change/how to do this...

(i just find it odd that u ask a question like that..)

There you can download the manual.

1. Press [SEQUENCE]

2. Press [PARAMS] and scroll the jog wheel to "Sequence Length"

In the section where it says "Now=2" thats your current value of bars and in the "New:2" is where you select the number of bars you want. Highlight New and scroll the jog wheel to your desirable number (max is 999)

3. Press [DO IT]

Most people that come here ask questions about the 500 before they buy so I wanted to clear that up.
