compressor tubes

Hello all, I have just acquired a behringer t1952 tube compressor.
I saw alot of bad reviews regarding the sound quality of the tubes.
They say you can replace the tubes with aftermarket tubes.
How many tubes go in?
How much$/what type of tubes should I get?
Websites that sell these tubes (links)?

mullard are generally considered top of the line. but it will depend upon the specific valve/tube.
i'm pretty sure your unit is only starved plate. as such, it won't really make much difference what valve you use.

What is a starved plate?
After doing research, alot of different people said they changed the tubes and got a better sound.

valves usually run at very high voltages. starved plate is when they are being fed very low power. many people don't consider starved plate to be true valve circuit. there is a valve in the circuit but it's not a valve circuit in that the work of amplification or rectification is not being done by the valve, but by an op amp or other IC.
one implication of this is that you can't overdrive the valve to get the desired distrortion that valves are beloved for.

anyway, yeah, try some other valves. see how it sounds. like i said, mullard are considered the best. but anything old that is made in the US or Europe is worth a go. it's a lot of fun collecting and trying different valves.

what valve are you after? i have about 500 or so in the attic.

I want a warm, fat sound.
Like a studio reel tape would be a good way to describe it.
I know nothing about tubes but, would you be able to use a tube you got out of an old tv or reciever? (I don't have any, just asking)
Also, can you interchange tubes to get different effect?

I would also be interested in copping some tubes beach_break.

there are different models and types of tube, you need to figure out what kind your compressor uses before you do anything else

saying you want a warm fat sound is not enough to identify the type of tube you need!

I don't know anything about tubes, hence the reason I'm asking about them here.
