Vintage Stereo Cassette

If i recorded my beats from either my mpc or my computer to a vintage stereo cassette player, and then record back into the computer, will my beats have that "warm" "vintage" sound once recorded back into the computer?

im thinking of like a vintage cassette player selling for about $20 on ebay, not the big reel-to-reel players

well... it will change the sound, that is for sure.... I wouldn't call it a good thing exactly but you might have fun with it. generally speaking... cassettes are shit. that doesn't mean you cant get something rugged out of it though.

let me add, maybe record only certain things onto the cassette and not the entire beat... for example, maybe just the kick drums, or maybe just the hats.... stuff like that.

well im seeing some for cheap with L/R ins/outs, so I may pick one up and try it out

i figured maybe just certain sounds (KICKS, SNARES, HATS, BASS) would get some results, not so much stuff like organs or pianos

not sure if it'll give that warm "hip hop" sound people are usually going for, but it may give us something.

yeah id like to hear what cassette can do to some beats. love that lo-fi sound. im gonna be grabbing a tascam 112 soon so will post results as well.

I have done this for drums. Its like using a compressor. More of a analog compresssor sound really. Works well for layering kicks.

if you want to hear cassette recorded hip hop check out my youtube channel .. every single one of my beats is recorded in one shot from an mpc 2000xl -> mixer -> cassette tape. i grew up on tapes so it just sounds 'right' to me but it's not for everyone. quality varies wildly from recorder to recorder and cassette to cassette.

Another cool trick I found with tape is to do it backwards...record your mix to tape then into your DAW or what ever, compress and eq....think is sound fat the wrong way arround but then I like crazy sounding compression and kinda like the hiss too lol
