Monk didn't play "wrong notes". But he insisted on recording 1st take - and that's it. That was the point of my retort.
Monk could play things so perfectly that he could then break down time signatures and chordal progressions and improvise on the outcome.
There's no right or wrong in music. Quantize can be used to keep things relatively on time but its not neccessary for the Max Roach, Bernie Purdies of the world. They can play in time. I think MPC users are spoilt for ease of playing. A kid in his bedroom with no musical skills can bake up a tight rhythm.
A lot of the examples given in this thread (the dillas, the madlibs, etc) are not arranged out of time. Yes, it is slightly syncopated but there's some quantizing going on there. Its deliberate but calculated.
It makes for a nice refreshing style which complements the ubiquitous 4/4.
Hip Hop benefits from experimentation, IMO. It takes it forward but still acknowledges the past.

A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties.
