Making my own TRS cables

Hey everyone I was wondering if anybody out there could help me by sending me a link to a good webpage or video to help me make my first TRS cables. Ive been doing some research and have decided to go with the mogami 2534 quad cable and gold Neutriks TRS tips I am also hoping to make a 8 channel snake for my 2500 to connect to my mixer. I found a good website called Markertek.com they have cheap prices on the cable and tips. I talked to the guy on the phone who does the custom work for markertek just to see how much it would cost to put the cables together for me. He went into great detail on how I shouldnt do it myself and that it takes a professional and experience. I dont know if he was just wanting to make my money or if it actually is that hard to do it properly. I figure that if i buy 1 extra cable with tips to practice on I should be fine I am pretty handy and my Dad is willing to help me and hes basically a cross between Bob Villa and Red Foreman. So if anybody could shoot me some tips or videos or whatever it would be greatly appreciated thank you all and to all a good night.

The guy that told you it takes "professional experience" is one of those guys who tries to scare the customer into believing something is bigger than it is. Its audio wiring, not hard at all. I make all my own TRS, TS and XLR's. Markertek and ebay both have decent prices on the connectors. Dont be so hung up on names tho. I have a neutrick connector and an ebay that are identical except one has a stamp on it.

It takes a little practice but seriously its not hard at all. It'll keep your setup a lot cleaner, it'll save you some money and you'll gain some pride in being more hands on with your rig.

Why did you choose the Mogami quad cable? If you are making Mono 1/4" cables for your 8-outs, you will not use three of the conductors inside the cable which is a waste.

You would need something like Mogami W2524 which is $0.86/ft.

Unless you need custom lengths, making your own cables is not always the best route.

Take a look at cables sold over at monoprice.com. You can buy eight 10' cables with the connectors already attached for $5.17 each which is cheaper than buying one Neutriks TRS connector. You would spend around 3x if you were to buy the bulk cable and connectors from that website.

MPCHunter, he said he was making TRS cables. So that would mean he's making balanced cables for his application. Of course he doesn't HAVE to use a quad cable, but it's OK for what he wants to do. -Actually that's what it's for if I remember correctly. I use canare quad for my balanced (mono) cable needs. I soldered the 2 blue wires to one connector, and the two white ones to the other connector.

It's too hard to make your own cables. But buy some good tools, and a good iron if this is going to be your thing. Prepping your cables with an exacto knife and using a crappy iron $10 with a wobbly tip is not much fun.

backtothelab, do you really need balanced cables? How long of a cable are you planning to run?

Unless you are running long cable lengths (greater than 15'), in a home environment you will hear little to no difference. If you are picking up hum through your equipment with short cables, then you likely have grounding issues with your setup.
