Polyphonic Sounds with MPC 3000

Fellas (and ladies!),

From the manual p.126:

• The Poly field:
This is a choice field with three options:
1.POLY: Multiple plays of the sound are assigned to additional
voices, allowing polyphonic overlap. This is useful
for sounds like ride cymbals, for which you don’t want
new notes to cut off old ones.

I understand this BUT, when I've sampled my piano key in (single key only) and then set that to 16 Levels (tuning), I want to be able to record chords. I can play them fine but when recording them, just the top level note remains (or whichever I pressed first). IE, it behaves monophonically.

Am I doing something wrong?

so you are saying that when you are not recording, then you can play the chord? but when you record it in, it plays like its set to mono?

or is it not working for chords when not recording either?

When I play the chords - fine.

When I record those chords - monophonic.

I've only had this machine for a week but I've read that manual over and over but I'm starting to think I may have missed something...

I think its a main screen track setting.


I have my 3k in a box right now, but on the 2kxl there is a spot that allows monophonic track use, as well as poly... designated by a "S" next to the track, or a "M". (on the XL)

OK. Will try this tonight - thanks for the suggestion. It would be a bit daft if you couldn't poly stuff up.

its gotta be a track setting. cause if it does not happen when not recording, then its track related.

The same as on any synthesizer/sampler that offers such a feature.

The 16 levels function was implemented for single note entry despite its chord like response when playing.

A byproduct of how the 16 levels function was implemented on an MPC3000 originally from what I remember.

No. That is just the way it has been on the MPC3000.

solutions are to spread each note of the chord out over separate tracks, or assign the sample to multiple pads and adjust tuning under programs/sounds > env, vel, tun.

Understood. Thanks all for taking the time to reply. I will try the workaround of copying the sound and detuning - Or I may just sample the chord in to begin with.
