I have a few set-ups.

My main beats are made all ITB using Audio-Finder, Logic Pro 8, and Bias Peak 5.
After all the years of hardware, I find that the music I create with logic sounds better than anything else. Using Imac dual 1.6 with mpd18 and motu ultralite & Bx8 Speakers.

I have an MPC 2000xl that I play with. I just load a break, chop it up real quick, and have some fun playing the break, on the pads.
Quick and easy.

I have a Yamaha RS7000, that I midi up to Battery 3.
The yamaha sequencer is very fun to play with.


I have an "Middle school" AKAI set up.

I just use the mpc for sequencing, not for samples.
The s3000xl is hooked up to the g4, after scsi transfer I save on zip and transfer to the s3200xl



I also have the powerbook setup with reason 4 for mobile beat studies

I have a Unitor8 connected to Cakewalk via USB and various other sound modules connected to the Unitor8, I have now purchased an MPC-5000 however I seem to be having issues to use it as a multitimbral sound source controlled from Cakewalk as the master sequencer. When I have a sequence running on the MPC I seem to be able to capture the data on Cakewalk but everything seems to be captured on Midi Channel 1 instead of spread over the relevant Midi channels.
When I play back from Cakewalk the sounds are not triggered on the MPC. This only happens on the MPC as a sound module all other sound modules work fine on the same Unitor8. Any ideas of what could be the issue?

Toshiba laptop... with Ableton 8. No real use for any plugins generally, as I'm so used to the ones in Ableton. Also use a 1TB hard-drive to store and back up everything.

EMU E6400 Ultra sampler... has a Jaz drive that doesn't work, so I can't actually save anything but it's got some great filters and routing options, and for some reason it smells quite nice. The heat it generates combined with the giant fan has also been a blessing in winter as a source of warmth.

Watkins Copicat, a crusty old tape delay which I just like to play with and see work. Can also use it as a sort of buss channel, and change samples to mono.

MPC 1000... barely use this, although every now and again i'll fire it up and mess around. Will probably use it more over summer when I can sit outside and play.

Korg Pad Control thing... Super portable, and the XY pad is fun at times to mess with to control filters and what not.

Korg M1... don't use this much but the Universe patch is sublime, as is Organ 2. Worth keeping for those alone.

Roland D50... don't use this much either but again I enjoy playing it.

Korg R3... my go-to synth and what I use as a midi-keyboard. Not the best sounding synth but I've learned so much from it.

Genelec 8020 monitors... very small, which due to the size of my room is a blessing, not the loudest, but for their size they're wonderful. I've had them for a few years so I'm really used to their sound.

The most important thing in my studio is a goddamned sturdy table. Don't take a sturdy and decent sized table for granted!

Basically I been using the ESX24 sampler in Logic which is pretty good but I'm in the process of getting some VSTs... too bad the converter to make VST to AU is about $100....

i also have a yamaha TX81Z rack synth but I don't really use it but i might hook it up for some killer bass lines

also looking to hook this macbook up to a big monitor, get a track pad & one of those logic keyboards & i already got a mighty mouse....

basically I set this back up in my room so i could lock myself in n **** around away from my housemates kid

it's good tho cause i see it every morning n every night

This is how I do and it feels chocolately and blissful. I always use an MPC500 when I need to bust out ideas when I'm far from my pad, then later I load up the files to the MV.

i got a turntable, a vcr, and my microkorg running thru a dj mixer which then feeds into my 2000xl.

the 2000xl feeds through the 8outs into a cheap peavey 8 channel desktop mixer. i have an alesis wedge hooked up to it for reverbs.

the peavey goes from the tape outs to a kenwood tape deck. i record all my beats to cassette, track them out manually with track mutes and pads.



finally got it all arranged on a desk, with monitors and a lil tv so i can watch tapes and sample shit.

My new favorite approach when I'm fighting producer's block is to take my mpc1k and/or alesis fusion out of the lab and into the living room or bedroom.

Also I been doing short (4 or 8 bar) sequences (with maybe 3-4 tracks) on my fusion, sampling them into the mpc, and chopping/reseqencing them.

Since ive added ableton into the equation ive still been doing some experimenting, but.....

MPC1000xl (jjos2xl): Brains of the operation (sequencer, main sampler)

S3000: Usually throw/chop drums, sample bass, and loop samples with her.

I have these 2 samplers outputs going to my Tascam fw-1082 control surface/audio interface (8 analog input/1 stereo s/pdif input). I use the digital out to sample stuff from the pc back to the samplers. I use ableton live to pretty much help with where the mpc lacks. (DOPE @$$ program that is changing things for me) Once i get things nice on the MPC/S3000 i track out to Reaper and season/mixdown. Still experimenting with different ways of doing things but this seems pretty comfortable now. Oh ... got a motif rack and roland xp30. I like to midi up hardware/vst instruments and sample into the mpc using the mpc's audio tracks. (i got a patchbay which helps out a ton when routing things) And of course.... VINYL baby!!!!
