Technically, the dude in question doesn't need money "now" nor "later" since it's his MPC in the first place. :P

I have a 60mk1 and a 500. I never use the 500 unless im traveling with a plane or a train. Thats when it comes in handy, in the studio? No not for me.

No diss to the 500 though its a great machine.

got the 1k, 2kxl, 3k, 5k, and now the 60II

had the 60II before, but sold it.

I love them all. they all sound different and do different things.

The one thing I forgot about was that on the OG OS 2.1 or whatever... you automatically erase the sequence data you recorded when you go to sample another sound... necessitating saving sequence every time you go to sample something else.

Ill most likely have to upgrade to 3.1 OS to stay sane, or use it as a slave

my fav: 3k. sound, swing, crunch and clarity.

but the flatness of the 60 is really dope too.

yeah that's for ya, amazing how the luxurious newer models spoil you with great features such as keeping sequences in ram while sampling... haha

luckily it takes a second to save and you get used to it fairly quickly. saving regularly is something you should do anyways. Plus after a while you develop a routine around the flaw... sample everything at once, then make sequences... always save if you realise you need more samples... also sample until the ram is full then get to work.

I dont think the 60 has mute groups or mute pads not that I would use the feature much anyways on this machine... but if you are into longer samples you might wind up irritated cause you actually have to properly truncate sounds on the bpm and sometimes sample shorter versions of the same sample for switch-ups. I dont know if there is a pad mute or mute group thing on this for sure though... never really looked for it.

thats the plan... never really got it going last time i owned it. but flipped 350 dollar profit selling it to UK on Ebay.

I am planning on just doing drums and bass lines on it for now.

even though gear is excellent, some advantages of making other adjustments in protools are becoming apparent lately.

its more about the sound palate now. optionsoptionsoptions.

wouldnt mind the 3.1 tho :D

I would recommend getting the 3.10 OS, it is such a difference in workflow etc. I still save quite often though but thats something you should always do.

Explain to me the difference in swing from the 3000 compared to the 4K and 5k. Please elaborate on this mysterious, elusive, can only be re-created in a 3000 swing... Oh, and the crunch too. Please explain to me how beats sound 'crunchier' in the 3000 cause that's another one of the mysterious features I would like to know about... As far as clarity goes, the 4K is superior in bit depth and sample rate, so unless clarity means something else, the 4K kills the 3000.

I believe he was talking about his favourite out of the models he owns... he doesn't own a 4000 so that doesn't apply. I would also suspect that the 3000 has the highest quality components out of all the models he owns so that may be part of the answer... sonically he can compare the differences since he can do side by sides...

as for swing, you can emulate... but emulating swing is not the same as adding the swing. the sequencers are different so the swing will be different. Okay probably not such a huge issue, however it's inspirational when it comes out sounding bad ass the first time around and you didn't even need to spend several minutes trying to get swing accomplished.

as for crunch, well the ad/da converters and internal components are older and different.

for example, I could sample stuff into my 60 at levels and pushing it hotter then I could on say the 2000xl cause for some reason it comes out sounding nice where sometimes that would make it sound overdriven or just... not as good. I dont know, for sure, I just suspect this.

Not saying the newer models sound bad or anything, cause the bottom lign is, you get what you put in it... and after that is said and done you are touching it up on the computer right?

Fess has a 4k and thinks everything else is less or something? LOL

Fess has a 5K too  . mr_debauch, thanks for the explanation. I never thought about the possible difference in converters. But the swing, now that's something that's more of a myth and has been a strong selling point of the MPC for a long time. Throw a beat in a DAW and turn off snap-and make the beat swing any way you want with ridiculous resolution to work from.

Do you notice any difference between the swing of the 5k and 4k? I seem to hear a difference between the 60 and 500. 60 is way more sloppy (in a good way) 500 is like a robot.
