I got really excited about this til i saw how it worked - For live playing ive always wanted a way to change pgms quickly, but alas this isnt it.The regular ways of changing pms are not good for live playing either.

I think itd be much better to have it within the pgm itself like the pad cc function, so if you know you'd want to make a quick change between a couple of pgms you can assign a pad to do just that (in all pgms concerned).

i requested this feature back in the day and i think it's great. there is no faster way to change a PGM then hitting a pad. you have 16 of them laid out right before you with their names displayed. this is more for live jamming/remixing.

hop into track mute to select the track (or use MODE + DATA WHEEL), the goto the new PADPGM page and start switching up the programs. you can go back and forth and change up your whole sequence really quickly. seems very intuitive to me.

also, what if you want to jump from PGM 1 to PGM 8 right on the beat, or switch back and forth between them really quickly? no way you can do that with the previous method (DATA WHEEL). with this new feature it's easy.

no disagreement with you there sooty , the problem for me is this :
"hop into track mute to select the track (or use MODE + DATA WHEEL), the goto the new PADPGM page and start switching up the programs."

all those extra button pushes and extra menus/screens uggh! Id same much prefer to access the same functionality within the pgm. So you choose which pad will change pgm and which pgm it'll change too.e.g Pad 1: pgm change:pgm 5 or whatever then set Pad1 on pgm5 to switch back to pgm 1 if you want too.

For live use i use the mpc with turntables and a few other bits and bobs.I lay down most of the drums and samples in one pass, and would love to switch pgms at a touch of just 1 pad (i.e. no extra menus/screens) so i can quickly mute pads or change samples before i go into the next section of the song - which might be some scratching or an accapella on vinyl or whatever. I dont want to be able to jump between a million pgms , just to switch between a couple of variations of the current pgm.

By the way this method would also mean you could record pgm changes from the pads too.

well, the best way to do that then would be just to use NEXT SEQ. set everything up ahead of time since you're talking about specific, pre-determined changes (always going to a certain program at a specific part of a song). when you change the sequence you change the mutes, programs, etc. label the sequences INTRO, TRANSITION, etc...

this new feature is more for improvisation when you don't know exactly what you want or you want to do things a little differently every time and experiment.

Yeah theres lots of ways of approaching it for something similiar - but its not exactly the same because of the nature of what im trying to do. For my live stuff i like to start out with no notes recorded, but pgms laid out on the right tracks, so next sequence wouldnt work for that, unless stuff was pre-recorded - which is not what i want . Id like to record multiple parts in one go and remove them later. Ive been toying with the idea of building a little switch box for this purpose, so i can route sounds from different out puts and mute them with switches.Doing it from the mpc would be better cause then you could change samples, add layers, change fx routings to previously recorded hits.

ok after having a proper mpc session last night i confirm that i like it better than i thought i would! the good thing is that the next sequence button remembers the last setting when you went into it. I dont really use next seq live, so thats good in that i cant press pad pgm before i begin and then every time i go into next seq, its already on the pad pgm screen.

the main problem for me now is the fact that you cant access pad pgm after recording - unless you hit stop. This is of course a limitation of next seq , but i dont see why it should be a limitation of pad pgm because pgms can be normally be switched after recording. Ive reported it as a bug to JJ. It would be ideal if nextseq went straight into the pad pgm screen after recording - so you can access the features that should work.

So as it stands at the moment, its not going to work for me until we can access that screen after recording.Apart from that niggle i would probably use it all the time.

this seems indeed interesting,

but as I don't have my mpc yet (probably shipping within these 2 weeks),

I'd like to understand a point this feature raises for me:

when you switch pgms for a specific track, it only changes the pgm, not the sequence within itself?

say you're in seq1, there is a drum sequence in track 1, and you can then pad-switch between different programs to browse different drumkits, but all will be using the same track1-seq1 drum pattern?

But I'm beginning to grasp a new idea with this feature:

one could have "different sequences" in one single track, with the track sequence having patterns for, say, 4 pad groups, and then, if you pad-switch with programs that are only using one pad group at a time, then you change program AND its sequence...

interesting 8)

its like in the good old days, using rack samplers etc, u could do a whole song/trck whatevr, and then for a bit of a freaky new approach, change the original program for a program thats not been developed for this track, and change them quickly so the events are played as normally sequenced, but loads of different sounds being triggered, i used to do that with my old FZ20, just to turbo up on a particular section, in a freer way than scripting it or using PC changes etc.

i welcome this change, and its in the right place, i'd like to try it, any reports on how instant/smooth the changes are?

The changes are smoother than using the data wheel or the up/down arrows in the pgm list window. Using these methods can cause samples to truncate when your switching. Frorm the new pad pgm, samples dont get snipped off in the same way(which i think is better). I intially had some reservations about the way it was implemented but could see it working well for me - one issue that remains though is you cant go into the screen after recording (without hitting stop) presumably because it uses the next seq key. Next seq cant be used after record but id like to be able to use pad pgm after record - in fact its essential for the way i want to use it.
