Note Variation Button not working

All of a sudden my Note Variation button stops working. Sometimes if I twist it or something it'll radically change the variation of a note, but it's been a pain in the butt.

Before I start hacking open the MPC and buying parts, I'm just wondering if there's any way for me to identify whether or not this is really the part that needs replacing, or if it could be something major.

I also don't have the skills nor the equipment to solder, so I am hesitant to start burning up my MPC.

Any ideas?

do you mean the slider or the button on top of the slider?

if it is the slider... it can be replaced for cheap... if it is the button on top of the slider it may be the tact switch that needs replacing. That is also cheap to do.... however you will need somebody who can solder to help you.

There is a slider check screen.

From the main screen hit SHIFT + 5 (TRIM) then SHIFT + F1
Then hit F5 for MEMCHK
Then hit F5 again for PADCHK.

From there you can see if your slider is working. If the values are wacky here, just replace it.

The slider moves fine but when I did the slider registry check mentioned above it was not registering my movements.

I'd just buy it and get someone to solder it in?

Yes that piece will fix it just fine.

It is a basic soldering job, taking the MPC apart is the hardest part.

That desoldering kit is intense! I didn't even know they made those.

Just FYI, while that radio shack soldering iron is fine for a job or two like this, if you ever got into some serious soldering, that iron would quickly drive you crazy. I can't count how many of those I've been through before I finally got a really good Weller. Again though, for a job like this they are fine, and cheap enough.
