Ive done some searching online since i got my mikrokorg, this is the only evidence ive seen of what youre talking about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdIujOnI454 check at 00.16 - the original patch plays as does the second, and both program lights are lit.

dont know how he does it though, nothing about it in the manual, Ii checked threads on the korg forums and others said it couldnt be done (didnt post this video to counter that though)

my theory is maybe he only uses single layer patches, and that means he can have up to 2x2 voices or 4x1 - really not sure - if you work it out - post back here!!!

Edit: whoops didnt read your post, just the title.. so my posts more a response to your title.

The XL definitely can play two patches at the same time, but you need to use a split keyboard with one patch on a lower half of the keyboard and the other patch on the upper half of the keyboard. They'll both be on the same midi channel, no way around that. If I remember correctly the XL has 6 notes of polyphony, but remember if your patch is monophonic or depending on other settings may give you less poly.

Good luck!

it seems that mbe u have a program created in MONO, not POLY, and that would definately play any midi poly material in mono.

check in Mode+Program, see if the program u r using says "play=xxxx" up on the screen right, should be Poly for your uses.
