I've just got an MPC1000 and it's awesome. I'd like to make some of my own sounds though so I downloaded Ableton Live and played with some of the instruments preloaded. I know you can use the computer keyboard, but I'd like to have a real keyboard. So, I've been looking at the LPK25.

So, what do you think of this setup? MPC1000, Ableton Live, and LPK25.

I know this sounds like such a newb question, but I am just that- a newb. THanks for the help though.

That's a very good setup for anyone. An LPK25 will be fine, but bare in mind it's size. Excellent for travelling, although I personally favour a couple of octaves more to really get the most out of playing.

Ableton is excellent IMO and has everything you will ever need. They also do an educational discount which is worth looking into, that's how I first ended up with it. Try and stick with a couple of programs for now, don't get bogged down with hundreds of free VSTs because it will not help your workflow. Keep things minimal and tidy, and most importantly learn your equipment, and enjoy experimenting with it.

Don't forget you will need a good set of monitors, and a soundcard ideally.

I will suggest you to get a 49-key keyboard
as at some point you will need those extra octaves.
Size is a problem but I tell you it is worth it.

I personally own a CME UF5 keyboard
and would suggest it to anyone. In the family we also got the UF6 and I am jealous of it... the extra octaves are worth it
Very good feel and great structure.....

Now for programs there are plenty for you to search and play with.

another decent keyboard is the axiom series.... the quality is fairly rugged, it has knobs, faders, pads, and keys. It is almost like a control surface, pad controller, and keyboard in one..... and they can be found for a good price. also I like the fact it has midi out to control gear unlike some usb controllers where they dont have the midi port included as well.

Thanks for the input guys. For monitors I'm just using some roland headphone monitors that aren't the greatest, but get the job done. On the issue of getting a sound card, can anyone recommend an affordable usb audio interface? Again, I'm just starting out so just the essentials are probably good enough. Any recommendations for a best bang for the buck interface?

thx

Crossings, I know you're an "expert" member or whatever, but seriously. I don't think I've seen a single post that you've replied to that doesn't involve trolling to some degree. If you don't know what trolling is, basically it's being a smart-ass just because.. I mean, on my last thread that you posted in you also left a hollow assed reply but I just let it slide because I thought you were just trying to get your thread count up. If you don't have real input though, I'd appreciate it if you would just stay out of my threads. Obviously the final decision on what my setup will be like is up to me, but don't get on me for asking the opinions of others.

to eddiek1syou and MGStudios... you guys both tend to ask the most pathetic questions that could usually be answered by a simple google search. the trolls of this board are actually the lazy thread-repeating people like you. this is LIFE and no one is going to grab you by the hand and lead you to where you need to go. there is a certain amount of effort that must be put in on your behalf in order for us to even begin to take you seriously.

now, having said that... let's observe a few of eddiek1syou's recent questions...

why can't i load these long-named files into my mpc1000?
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=135868

oh, here's a brilliant one about how do i make beats without smoking weed?...
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=136244

at least in this thread you admit to knowing NOTHING
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=135764

help! my pads cancel each other out and i can't bother to read my manual to learn about mono/poly!
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=135899

what is swing!??
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=135925

etc... etc... etc... dude, go take a looong shit with the manual in your hands or something. you aren't even trying.

and to you, MGStudios... in the past i've even sent you PMs to help you figure shit out, but you just have a hard time getting anything. i wouldn't be surprised if the 2 of you are even the same person [since you did, after all MGStudios, create a dozen fake accounts to vote for yourself when i was hosting a beat battle with vinyl as a prize... remember? 'cause no one else has forgotten it]. your "time to shine" already came & went and now you're just standing around the boards looking "dim".

both of you n00bs need to just get off the internet and sit in front of your fvckin MPCs for a few days on end. in a nutshell, there is no easy way. and i'm beginning to think that beat making isn't for you...
By eddiek1syou Sun Nov 07, 2010 4:31 pm
Honestly, I don't know how to put THIS in a nutshell, but you're a straight up loser and you should get off the internet and walk around in real life talking as much as you do and see who doesn't clock you. As a matter of fact I'm pretty sure you've gotten beat up at least a couple times for running your mouth, right?

Listen. The internet does not belong to you. These boards? They don't belong to you. My threads? They don't require retards like you to get on them with your head all high like you're some force to be respected. If people didn't ask questions in this world, you know what we'd have? A bunch of YOU. Idiots that is. If you ever have kids (god forbid) and they ask you for advice, are you going to tell them to F off and google it?

While you're sitting here crying, "Oh my precious forums, these people are harming the forums." Like it's your girlfriend, there are threads upon threads that have hundreds upon thousands of views with only a handful of a replies and of that handful yours are the ones that totally bring these boards down.

People get on these boards to get educated, remember that. If you're not about that, then maybe you need to check YOURSELF and see if YOURE not THE ONE TURNING THESE BOARDS INTO SH!T. If you want some VIP forum where everyone is a self proclaimed super producer then you need to go start your own private board for the elite.

I'd like to mention that I've read the manual, and everyone agrees to an extend that the manual is pretty much garbage for people jumping right into things- hence the mpc-1000 book made by the creator of this site. So if you want to get on my case about that, then so be it. It's obvious that you've got way too much time on your hands and unfortunately users of this board are victims of it. But through all of those threads you've mentioned, as idiotic as you say they are, you'll see that I do not claim to be more than I am. Furthermore, there are guys in there making HELPFUL comments as newb as the posts are. That's the difference between YOU and the rest of the world. Some people are here to make this world a better place, you're here to make it as miserable as your life is. I guess you came straight out of your moms d!ck a genius right? OK. Peace.

if you were to put even half as much effort into learning your MPC as you just put into that last reply, you wouldn't have to ask the retarded questions you do.

i apologize if i didn't feel like soothing your insecurities by assuring you that you have a proper setup or whatever it is that you're trying to accomplish in this here thread, but if you think i'm an idiot i wonder what that makes you... 'cause at least i know my sh!t. i also don't feel the need to ask people "what do you think of my setup?"... "is it good?"... could you be any more insecure, son? my reply was an honest one... it shouldn't matter what we think... does it work for you? 'cause it appears you're not even sure yet...

and please stop fronting like you've read the entire manual when it's obvious you haven't with the threads you've started...

You are an idiot and I am the guy that is using these boards for what they were meant for. Me asking what people think of a particular setup has nothing to do with my insecurities. And is that really the best you could come up with? People that don't ask questions don't go places in this life. Even producers look to others for opinions on their creations. Athletes have trainers around them all the time to critique them. Bodybuilders have trainers that tell them what parts of their body they think need to be worked on. Successful businesses ask the consumers what they want, consumers give answers, in turn, companies create products that suit the needs and desires of the consumers. These analogies don't have a direct correlation to me creating this thread, but I think you get my point. Is it wrong for me to ask more knowledgeable people to make suggestions on something that I am just now trying to delve into? You really don't make sense man. If this is the mentality you've had your entire life, I don't see how you could have excelled in anything like school, a job, or relationships.

And this comment: "'cause at least i know my sh!t?" wow.. just... wow.. That is a testament to how far up your @ss your head is. So I guess you should go and do big thangs and make some music. Or wait, maybe you're the insecure one so you feel the need to troll on other people's threads and try to belittle them 'cause you know your sh!t. Get that out of here man..

first of all enough with calling crossings a troll, he hasn't trolled in your thread... if you think any response that you dont like is considered trolling then you dont know the definition of the word... And as for the expert member thing, that shit has to do with post counts. Every forum has a similar thing. And dont even try to imply that crossings doesn't use these boards for that they are meant for or thatsomehow he doesn't contribute to this place.... crossings has held beat battles where he shipped valuable records from his collection to the winners... and that shit happened more then once.

second of all asking "is my setup good" means shit all.... if I went into my studio room and saw that setup instead of what I currently have I wouldn't be thrilled. Sure it can work, but everybody has their own setup built to what is "good" for what they are doing and what they can afford. That wouldn't work for me. What you have to do is, find out the piece you need (ie: keyboard) then check the music store websites to see the prices... once you find one in your price range you check sonicsound and vintage synth.... what ever to learn about the unit. Check some articles that state the pros and cons. That shit is called research.

While in most cases on the internet it's true that it is easier to type a question on the forum then reading the manual for the machine you are trying to operate.. People got used to spoon feeding. But sometimes when it's obvious no research has been done before the question was asked it doesn't fly around here... get used to it.

PS. get an good audio interface the first time, cause a lot of the cheap ones sound terrible.

He's trolling- that's why I am calling him out on it and it's simple as that. It doesn't have anything to do with me not liking his posts. He's provoking confrontation by being a douche and making useless responses. I'm fully aware that the status correlates to the amount of posts made by a user, and I'm sure that out of the two thousand some odd posts he's made some contributions to the boards, but I think the "vets" sometimes get on a tip like they're elite. So OK, he's had a contest or whatever. But how does that have anything to do with me and how does that have anything to do with any users that have signed up to these boards from thereon after? If he's a douche to a handful of the new users, then that's the only thing we have to go on. Not some beat making contest he had in the past. There are users here with 8,000 something posts that have made positive contributions to threads by new users, as newb as they are. THAT is true contribution.

I appreciate your advice on checking out gear reviews through those sites though, real informative. Seriously though.
