ay whats up every1. just wanna say yo. im new here. i just had a couple questions

i was thinking about switching over to the akai products, but im not sure where to start

i currently have a roland SP 404sx and i was wondering what are some of the differences (if you know), if you dont know some of the differences, well, what are some of the things the MPC has to offer?

(im also thinking about getting a keyboard too, but thats a diff story, if u have any suggestions that would help. thinking about the mpk49, cuz its got the pads on it too. but i hear nothing but great things about korg keyboards)

peace

404 has better fx but the mpc has better sampling and sequencing. many people here will talk about using both units together and the sp303/404 and mpc make an amazing combo according to many posts around here.

Also, watch out for the mpk49, do some research on that keyboard...

i used to have a sp-404, but i sold it to get the mpc 500 and couldent be happier. although now i want a 1k instead

the sp-404 is more geared towards live gigs (but can be used just fine as a sampler, and it does have dope fx)

the mpc has a better sequencer, with more quantize functions and swing.
if i remember right the 404 just had strait quantize.

the main thing i hated about the 404 was the flash card thing it had, i couldent load my samples onto it because i could never find one that would fit into my computer so that really pissed me off about that. i never got to make a full beat on it before i ended up selling it)
the mpc 500, 1000, and 2500 all have usb ports on the back of them so you can just click and drag the samples and drop them into your mpc. the 5000 probably does too.

i think your going to find that the mpc will be a little easier to navigate than the 404 because there is actual words on the screen, its not just numbers and a few letters like on the 404.

wait so the old 404, didn't that take those smart media cards? it's not possible to get a USB card reader for those? Or am I thinking of the 303?

also, the new 404 (sx?) doesn't that take CF or SD or something like that?

it kind of blows not getting to transfer stuff but worst case scenario you could just record every little thing you make onto your computer.... once apon a time there was no saving and you needed to record your stuff onto tape just to remember the riff you played last session!!! :D computers kick ass when you think about it like that.

In Haze, wassop! Welcome to these neck of the woods. Of course you'll find other SP fam here as well (few changed their names but you'll know them)so don't be afraid to stretch out.

SPs are more samplers than sequencers and MPCs are more sequencers than samplers but both deliver in both departments. An MPC doesn't have the real time effects control like an SP but makes up for it when you build sequences with multiple tracks. It does have effects no doubt, but not many to experiment and get crazy like the SP.

The MPC can resample songs and sequences, and you can pitch tune samples to slow down or speed them up.

For starting out, I would recommend the 1000 or the 2500. The 500 is good for the seasoned MPCer but a brain-gasher for the newbie, but if you master it right you can easily get busy on any MPC.

Last word, if you're use to SPs then there will be a learning curve for the MPCs. But nothing that dedication and experimenting can't handle. Just bare with the manual and play with it often and you'll soon witness its potential and the hidden powers it possesses that makes it a class above SPs.

Peace

yeah it took the smart media cards, but i could never get my computer to recognize them, i mightve just got a buggy card reader, but i ended up selling it before i could really test it out.

I rock the older 404 and a 2000xl. The combination is so righteous that it cured my gear lust. MPCs and SPs simply belong together.

Now that you have an SP and an MPC, you'll be unstoppable.

I have a USB card reader that works with my smart media cards, so it's certainly possible

Well i bought a Sp 303 about a month and half ago, and I've just been running my MPC and Microkorg thru it for its effects...i havent sample/chopped anything on the 303 yet.

I just run thru the 303, then from the 303 to my computer.

If your looking for a decent MPC, I'd start with a 1000. some people start off with the 500, but unless you do a lot of traveling, i'd pick up the 1000. more outs, 4 extra pads and its not that much more expensive than the 500 on ebay nowadays either. im actually thinking about upgrading from my 500 to the 1000.
