Noise when sampling kiks and lo frequencys

Guys,whenever I sample kiks bass notes or any low freq. sound ,when played back there is always a noisy "hiss like ' sound added to them .....the sounds are clean when I sample into the MP.....but not after i assing them to a pad and play them back.......please help

If you'te using an mpc60 that would be one of the many wonderful artifacts you get with 12bit ADC/DAC's

But when I first got my MP years ago this never happened.....It's not as noticeable when I sample snares or anything else that is'nt in the lo freqs.Does anyone think in maybe a bad componetnent on the board itself.....I'm open to any help/suggestions....this is nerve wracking....and slowing me done ......once again.......help...........thankz

The reason you don't hear the hiss on snares, hihats etc. is because these sounds have stuff going on in the same frquency range as the hiss, this effect is called masking.

My 60 has always hissed. Might be that it's a problem with mine too, but i like it. If you want hi-fi audio quality a 12bit sampler isnt the best choice

Maybe you bought new monitors or did something else to improve your listening situation ? Chances are the hiss has been there all along, you just didnt notice it until now.

Sample with as strong as signal as possible, gain it until it the sampler distorts and then pull it back. If you sample a weak signal and amplify in the mpc you bring up a lot more hiss. If your moving samples from a computer check the levels in some sort of audio eiditing program, the loudest point should be just below 0dBfs.

Some tips, which i'm sure you already knew, hope you sort it out.

1. Before sampling kick in mpc-60 (808 example), cut the bass from 0 to 20, max 40 Hz, that should kill unwanted noise.
2. If you are talking about "ringy" sound, that's non-linear sampling engine, that's what sparks the boom bap sound.

- For me best way to make kicks for my 60 (on computer) is to cut high noise after "the hit" in the kick, and cut globally entire sound below 0 to max 40 Hz; and last, very important is in "big zoom screen mode" to finish the sound signal with fade out (it eliminates the micro click triggered by 60's playback non linear engine).

Thankz for the response guys....I don't think its the 12bit sampling rate.it might be the age ..perhaps its a leaking cap or something.maybe the board needs to be replaced.....I tried every possible recording level going into the MP....from hot ,to- too hot, to low level at all 3 slider positions..same result.the reason I think it may be something internal is because with the input level switch at hi ,I can hear a hissing sound before I even sample anything......It's a pain in the ass I'll tell you that much....I can clean up the lo freq sounds in the computer after the fact ....But thats an xtra step I never had to do before......anyone else going thru this....any of yall seasoned MP vets have a solution....thanks in advance

i get this hissing sound as well but i like it.

however i cant sample anything when the switch is set to high level, its way too much? like full on distortion! is this normal?

Thats whyI was thinking maybe something on the board itself is bad....A sign of old age perhaps................its still frustrating.................help/suggestions

You can try replacing all the electrolytic capacitors in the as these tend to dry up and become leaky as they age.

You could also have a bad opamp or two -- these can go bad over time.

If you have soldering tools, you can certainly change the capacitors. However for the opamps, I would send it to a service center like Forat or VST as they will likely have a calibration procedure and can make the adjustments in the trimpots.

thanks, this has me a bit concerned. i can sample fine using low & medium settings on the back of my MPC 60 but high gain is like guitar distortion, unless my meter levels are around 5-10 on the mpc.

typically how's the best way to sample into the MPC? i usually have my gain on Low or Medium and the Meter Reading hitting about 89-90

I have the same problem. I called Bruce Forat yesterday, his suggestion was to set the record level @ 89. I tried that, and it does help, but the noise or hiss is still there. The noise is driving me crazy, too. I'm thinking about sending it to Forat (I need a floppy also). Or just sale the 60II. I also noticed when I load MPC 3000 samples into the 60II, they really sound like crap!

I have this same issue - any solutions?
