$1,200..Looking for recomendations

Hi I have my computer, MPC 4000 and a Keyboard. I am looking to get $1,200 worth of other studio equipment. I am looking to get turntables, a studio Mic, a Mixer and Studio Monitors also anything that i might need for ex: a sound card device for my vocals.. also any wires i may need to hook everything up (to my MPC / PC for ex: Midi cables (which i have for my keyboard to mpc. Any recomendations are appreciated, thanks.

Traktor Scratch: You can get it now for half the price. I believe under $200.00
A turntable and a mixer: You should be able to get a used set for less than $200.00
Keep the rest of your money in your pocket.

I'd dump it on monitors. Its one of the most important investments any producer will make.

i'd suggest an audio interface, monitors, one decent condenser... a decent mic cable. just get to work, damnit!

MONITORS will be the single most important investment you make. If you spend a good amount on quality monitors you will always have a reliable reference. you will always have a base point where all your audio starts off so your overall sound is consistent. While treatment is nice its fairly pointless at this point. Consistent monitoring is something that many strive to achieve and few actually do. This is why cats get so frustrated when it comes time to mix. They spend $300 on cheap monitors and say "these are fine"...then they reach the speakers limitations and pick up another pair. Now they have to learn these monitors from the beginning. Trust me, monitors are a wise investment.

Telling someone to spend 1200 on monitors in an untreated room - is poor advice at best.

Although - i do concede that I have no clue what the guys chosen room is - If it is fully treated - then go ahead and spend your budget on monitors - if not, don't

And telling him to treat a room when he may or may not have monitors is stupid.....

Starting with a wad of cash and very little idea how/where to spend it is backwards. Its also setting yourself up to be disappointed with your purchase down the road when you realize you should have spend that money more wisely or focused on other areas.

For example, why you gonna buy a soundcard and a mixer, when most mid-priced soundcards can function as a mixer? ...when all DAWs can function as a mixer?

Yes and no. Granted that he doesnt spend it just because its burning a hole in his pocket, thats usually where the mistakes happen. But if he spends it wisely on something he'll have for a long time then its not a bad idea at all.

Also, $1200.00 really isnt a ton of money. Now if he said he had $20k then yea, slow down

I will have to cosign pound on this one, monitors is never a bad investment. no matter what gear he has he will need those and it's better to get a good pair right away then going through several pairs on your way to getting that good pair.

As for room treatment, come on guys... the dude has 1200 bucks to spend. What do you really expect him to treat for that type of money.... room treatment is not something you can walk into a store and leave with. it takes designing and knowledge.


Also, I would like to point out that pound has actually built studios so I would trust his judgement... he is one of those dudes who not only knows the technicals but his music and audio work speaks for itself.
