simple question, does the 5000 have the same sound as the 2500/1000 ????

Same sound engine? No.
Comparable? Yes.

More PPQN, so you can get far more accurate grooves/swings than you can on any previous model. Course half the fun is that they aren't 100% accurate.

I'd try and explain what you are looking for better though.

Sample engine?
Track/MIDI engine?
Other?

i was basically playing wth 5000 today for about an hour. really liked it, howevere its alittle out of my budget. thinking of getting a 2500 and wondering how much i am losing.

I would have to say the 5k workflow is the gain. The loss to me, is the control. To much control means easy to lose natural feel and get lost in the settings. Another plus is the synth. Its very usefull and can actually make good signals. I think the effects busses are lacking but the eq is nice for tunning. The hd recording is easy to use. If i was to pick one for swing alone it would be the 3k . Best swing on any mpc. If i was to get a powerhouse for patern creation , dirty south, dubstep 4k.. for underground sample based sound 2500xl. The 5k is just a feature rich bling machine that does a little of all the above and adds a synth, a true hardware production center capable of making full songs of any style in the ( key words here ) RIGHT HANDS. I have had 3k,4k,and use 5k's now. Good luck. One...
