Common methods for setting up songs on the 60...

I'm starting to program beats for my mans album and need to organize my sequences in song mode. I want to know what are some of the best ways you guys create - INTRO - HOOK 1 - VERSE 1 - HOOK 2 - VERSE 2 - HOOK 3 - VERSE 3 - OUTRO.....etc.

Also. How come when you copy a track from one sequence to another it doesn't carry the name of the track over. I have to go back in and retype the name. When I copy an entire sequence to another sequence it retains all the titles of the tracks.....It's so damn annoying!

On the copying thing,

The way I work is make the one sequence have all the elements you want in the song, then copy the sequence and mute different parts. It's a great way to have everything available at any song step. In that case I guess you wouldn't have to copy individual tracks to another sequence, and it will save you some time.

when i copy sequences it does name the track the same, you on an old OS or somethin ?

as far as song structure i think thats pretty much up to you and how u want the track to flow, i have a hard time with this... once i have a loop going i find it hard to keep going with it and finding other arrangments that match the feel etc
hopefully that will come with practice/more attempts..

What elmacaco said, I do it just about exactly the same way. It's fast and easy.

interesting, I find it easier to arrange sequences in cubase.

ie. recording each track from each sequence, copy & paste as needed, then truncate the tracks files or delete them all together in cubase to "mute" them.

I used to work that way. Never again, too time consuming compared to song mode.

I guess I was referring to Copy EVENTS. That I know doesn't carry over any track title information.

Man I don't mess with CUBASE or any computers for that matter. That's why i've got my MPC-60 and my S950. You shouldn't need a computer for anything other than to record your final mix into.

Interesting technique. What happens when you want to mute more than one track at once? Are we talking something automated here? Are the mutes played live? Is there some way to assign mutes to pads that I dont know about or something?

Easy, you mute all the tracks you want muted. I'll start with all tracks muted but the basic drums, then let out some extra hats, then the bassline, etc.

No automating, just 4 8 or 16 bar loops with variations and buildups happening over a few song steps.

My firend gave me that advice when I first got my MPC, it took a while to get there.

Never really thought about approaching it like that. I have to edit sequences because there are times during the song when I may want the drums and bass to drop out. Sometimes everything but the hat being muted fits a certain part. To have to mute them individually (really fast) scrolling thru sequences to try and achieve that same result, wouldnt work for me.

My mutes often have to be abrupt to get the effect im looking for. I would have a better time doing this with the mutes on a mixer, I think. That is of course if im understanding you right.

Thanks for breaking it down tho. I thought you had come up with some revolutionary multiple muting style...and was prepared to name my next nephew after you, because I hate editing sequences.

Oh yeah, if you want to do quick mutes like that then a mixer is the best way.

I also work on the mixer, but I try to translate the mixer changes I do into the song mode sequences. Sometimes I need to cut something short within the loop, in that case I just copy the sequence and edit it to only have the elements I want for a short time. It is really quick on the 60, I just erase the bars I don't want in one swoop and I'm done.

it is good to have an idea of what you want to do before doing it in song mode, but yuo don't have to, since it is so easy to change things. I often just lay out the sequences with different mutes and check the transitions between them before song mode by switching the sequences. Then I go into song mode and plug the whole thing in and make further adjustments.
