External Drives

Looking for a good external drive for my laptop that can run Pro-Tools on it. I've invested in drives before thinking they'd work just to find out they don't.

Whats the best drives to use? Is there any that or just USB powered?

Can't speak highly of these enough - at first I though it was a bit gimmiky - but now have three - two for backup and one for gigs - tough, bus powered (over FW anyway - not sure about USB though)

Based on my brief research, anything beyond 500gb will require ac adapter..

Why not make one yourself pick up hard drive enclosure with connections desired and hard disk you want. putting it together and start using is literally 5 mins of work

I dont need anything bigger then 500 gigs for the portable.

5mins of work to put it together and start using and cost $60, how much would equally big brand name external disk cost you?

Its going to have to be FW if you want to run sessions off it.

yea what poud said, personally I would avoid usb...firewire 400 at least

I got myself one of those black enclousers, put 500gb 7200rpm hard disk, hooked up to mbp using sata shit is flying!

I've assembled 3 hard drives in the past none failed,,,I bought one brand name WD MyBOOk external hard disk shit failed after about a year..

I can also vouch for the LaCie drive mentioned by MCL. Those are very good. I also recommend you check out Glyph drives. All the products I own from Glyph (quite a few) are built like a tank, fast, extremely quiet, have never failed and I use them with Pro Tools a lot. I've never tried any of these with USB.

I'm coppn an OWC On The Go 750gig external hard drive to run with Pro Tools and Ableton. I'm gettn the Firewire 400 + USB 2.0 combo drive. It runs off of firewire or usb power, so you dont need to plug it in. It's 7200rpms and small and portable. it's only $150

i would get the Firewire 400 + USB 2.0 combo drive. my friend got the Firewire 400/800 + USB 2.0 triple and said he had probs with it. you really don't need a firewire 800 port. firewire 400 works perfect, been using it with Pro Tools for yrs, no problems.

Those look hella portable. I gotta research these. I dont really use 800 much but a 400 option with usb is a dope idea.

i'd go with eSATA over firewire if you have that type of connetion available on your computer..theyre faster than firewire 800 and cost about the same or cheaper.

has anyone tried any external RAID enclosures yet (firewire or USB it doesn't matter)

if so, which ones, and what was the verdict. I am thinking maybe this may be a good idea for a music storing thing.

I can vouch for glyph. My drive is silent, never gets hot, it's fast, and the glyph customer service is excellent. The drives aren't the cheapest, but I've had my drive since late 06 and the only issue was that my fan went out after 2yrs. I emailed glyph and the only question I got was what my address was. They sent me a new fan in 3days and in about 5min of labor it was fixed. This is the drive I have btw. And no they aren't paying me.
