Lil Firecracker!

So a couple months ago the power supply took a dive, and I was on batteries for a bit.
Eventually I gave in and started using one of those "Universal" plugs that have the selectable voltage and different little tips. At first, it didn't work, so I reversed the little tip to reverse the polarity?!? Anyhow, it worked, so I ran with it.

Been using the plug for a while now, but the other day, the strangest thing happened.
I pushed pad 7 and POP! The MPC made a noise similar to popping a bubble in a piece of bubble wrap. I'm not talking about a sound from the speakers, I mean the MPC itself became a little firecracker.

Smelled kind of like burning plastic. Everything seems to be working fine so far, and I'm planning to get a new plug soon...

Anyone have similar issues with the power supply going out?

Any suggestions on a good replacement plug that works?

Sounds like there's too much voltage going through your 500. If you have extra AC adapters around the house for mixers or small devices, then I would use those instead. Also, if the 500 is not in use, always disconnect it from the outlet. Leaving it plugged in for long periods of time without use can burn out the AC adapter.

take a multimeter and check the output voltage... i bet it is floating around 13 volts or 14 volts..... those things often dont do shit when you lower the current.
