thanks...

I have this mixer right now
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MG124c

to give a better understanding, here is what I have

-MPC2500 and 2 sound modules hooked up to the Yamaha mixer
-MOTU MTP-AV midi interface
-microKorg

I've had this setup for a year now and finally got Logic and the MIDI interface a few weeks ago
so I could start tracking my work....
That's why I wanted to know about if I needed the audio interface to get my MPC drums into Logic
I got an RCA y-cable but I'm having trouble getting sound going into the Mac Mini
like you said, the mixer offers another route, hopefully that could help
aside from that now I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to hook it all up

all I wanna do is setup each track, whether midi or audio, so I can see them all in Logic and mix them down
and be done with it....

^^^ Check this out. Would you believe I use two 16x16 audio interfaces coupled to a 24x8x2 large format mixer.

And yes, you need to dis the "Y" cable hookup.

BTW, did you peep the motu audio interface I posted for you in my last thread?

no I didn't see the MOTU audio interface you posted

that's a big mixing board!

what do you suggest I end up really doing? get an audio interface?

what about the mixer I have? no use?

IMO, an interface gives you more options than not having one. If you feel your mixer lacks the needed number of inputs & I/O, then I'd suggest upgrading.

But if you really don't need to deal with that aspect of your equipment, then stick with what you have and upgrade when the opportunity presents itself.

The motu interface I posted can be found HERE.

why is syncing this stuff so difficult?

I'm following the directions just trying to hook my MPC to my MOTU MTP AV and get it into Logic with MTC & MMC

in the meantime I got the stereo outs going into the input of the Mac Mini

is it the MOTU interface? Logic recognizes

it still won't work... I'm at my wits end... and as usual something seems to be going over my head, but what

i'm assuming what you want is to track your mpc & mods all at once into Logic, so that you just hit PLAY on the mpc and everything gets recorded into Logic on it's own track.

for that, you'll need to get a firewire audio interface (don't bother with the usb ones. too much glitch potential.) that has 2 inputs for each sound source you have (so you can record each device in stereo).

so lets say you have an mpc & 2 sound modules: you would need a firewire audio interface with 6 inputs. you would assign each input to a track within Logic and then everything would be recorded onto a separate track. you would bypass your hardware mixer & just jack your mpc & modules straight into the audio interface & do all your mixing/eq in Logic later.

a 6 input or more audio interface starts getting into some serious coin. check the m-audio stuff out as it is the lowest priced & i've never had any problems with their gear.

you could also get by with a cheaper interface with just 2 inputs, but then you would have to record things in multiple passes, one pass for each sound source. kind of a pain and can also introduce sync issues.

as far as getting Logic synced to your MPC, there are a bunch of threads on that here. do a search on these forums or better yet just google "sync mpc to logic".

yea I know ur right... the sync part isn't really what I need info on anyway, I'm just frustrated...
thanks for the help though, it's great when someone responds in detail

anyway, you assumed right when you thought all I want to do is put all my MPC and mod tracks on Logic
I currently have just a MIDI interface, a MOTU MTP AV
I assume this would be a suitable Audio interface?
http://cgi.ebay.com/MOTU-828-MKII-MK2-F ... 001wt_1099

other than the Audio interface solution, which is the missing piece..
I'm kind of confused on how I'm going to hook all my stuff up
as far as MIDI and audio with 2 new pieces of hardware that are being brought in

right now I have all my gear hooked up to a 12-channel mixer (Yamaha MG124c)
the mixer moniter out goes to the amplifier via mic cables
audio cables are going to the mixer in 3 channels
they are coming from = MPC, Mo Phatt, Proteus
each sound module's midi IN going to the mpc midi OUT's (A & B)
got the keyboard to hook up to the MPC to play the mod's midi info into the sequencer
and just do the drums and vinyl samples with the .WAV files
when I'm done let's say I have 12 tracks in the sequencer, 6 drums and 6 from the mods..

what I'm wondering is, how do I incorporate the interfaces with Logic?
-do I disconnect the MIDI from the MPC and put them in the MOTU Midi interface?
I assume that's why there's 8 ports
-the audio cables from the mods going to the mixer are now going to the Audio interface right?
-does the MPC hook up to the audio interface and the Midi interface?

so you said the mixer is out of the equation and wouldn't be necessary?

as you can see I have the idea, I just need a little direction...
I've been stressing everyday on the internet for like a month with small steps...
any help would be very kind

yes to all of the above. you have the right idea.

mixer is good for live use, but in this case for computer recording you don't need it. the audio interface will take it's place.
same for the midi interface. each piece of gear gets connected to it's own midi port on the interface.

handle all of the mixing/recording/routing of the audio & the midi in Logic. that way you can record each audio & midi track separately, change it later if needed, mute it, process it, etc.

hook up one piece of gear at a time to your setup and get it working before adding the next one. start with the mpc, then one of the modules, then the other module. each time verify that you can record audio & midi from it in Logic before you move on to the next one. take it step by step & google stuff when you get stuck.

hey thanks a lot, I understand a lot more about the setup now than I did yesterday..

but I'm still kind of confused about some things..

if the 'IN' of the sound module is now going 'OUT' to the MIDI interface and no longer out to the MPC
how does the MPC (where I recorded the MIDI info) play the module and give it the data?

usually I got the keyboard in MIDI "IN" on the MPC and the 'OUT's going to A & B for the modules
am I now 'playing' the MIDI info into Logic?

I hope I don't sound that lost.... you kinda get what I'm saying?

via Logic. you can route any of your midi inputs to any of your midi outputs in Logic. make sure you setup & name all of your midi inputs in Apples 'audio midi setup' app that comes with your mac. that way Logic will know what the names are of all the gear that is connected to your mac.

when you play out live without a computer you will need to connect all your gear together with physical midi cables, but while at home in the studio just connect everything to your midi interface & let Logic handle the routing.

i've already answered that, and i've already given you more than enough info to start figuring the rest of this out on your own.

start hooking stuff up & see what happens. google & read the manuals when you get stuck.
