2KXL + Cubase AI 4 sync (for the last time)

What up,

I know it was answered at least million times, but... There are some details in this case that I can't work out. I need an advice, please.

PC (Cubase AI 4) /USB/ -> Sound device
Sound device /MIDI OUT/ -> 2KXL /MIDI IN/
Sound device /MIDI IN/ -> 2KXL /MIDI OUT/
2KXL /STEREO OUT/ -> Sound device /STEREO IN/

Sync In & Out both MIDI CLOCK in MPC. Cubase - new empty project + Add MIDI track.

When I hit the pad, I hear the sound (because of Stereo In), but I can't record any midi information into Cubase. But, when I click on keyboard in Cubase I hear the sounds from the MPC. I guess everything is set up and connected correctly.

I would like to achieve recording midi of each track into Cubase. Then record sequences track by track, because I don't have 8 outs. Add some effects and shit, do mixing there.

Could it be done in Cubase AI 4? Only legal Cubase I have. And sorry for the lame question.

You need two cubase tracks per MPC track then.

One to record midi (set to receive on same channel / correct MPC output)
One to record audio (from MPC stereo out)

Record enable both tracks.

Make a list for us and yourself:

Cubase midi track record port
Cubase midi track record channel
MPC track midi out port
MPC track midi out channel

Forget listening to the mpc, sounds like you've got that down.

Throw a simple vst/midi device into cubase and see if you can get that to make sound via the mpc pads.

That is step one....but it sounds like you are trying to do too much at one time. Get one piece working at a time, forget sync, forget sending midi to the mpc, forget the mpc audio altogether, just get midi from mpc into Cubase.

Thanks man. So what I did ... Empty project + Add Instrument (VSTi from FL) and now I can record midi data from MPC to MIDI track or Instrument track. But I don't hear anything. I don't even hear clicks and that's the strangest thing. But I've heard it once in million tries.

Well, if you can record MIDI, then isn't your problem solved?
Now work piece by piece adding in the other functionality you want (sync, record audio, etc).

I don't know what orange sign you are talking about (not a cubase user).

If you can now record midi, great, set up another track to record the audio and there you go.

You're right, but I'm still thinking about the better sync between it. I've heard that Cubase should auto-detect MPC's BPM and automatically record track, so then You would need no quantization in Cubase.

Any ideas?

Ok so you are able to record...good. We know that the MIDI pathway between MPC->PC is working.

Next step, what is your MPC sync settings set on?
What is Cubase Sync settings set on?

You can set up the mpc to use the same port you are already using, you now just need to enable sync in Cubase to receive the clock.

However, some DAWs don't like being slaves to an external device. In this case, set the bpm in cubase to what you want, and use Cubase transport to send start / stop messages to the MPC. Again, you need to make sure both DAW and MPC are set up to transmit / receive at the appropriate places.
If the DAW can only transmit, and not receive midi sync, then you need the midi out of your device going to midi in on MPC.

Well, I've done it through Midi Time Code. So MPC MIDI out - Soundcard MIDI in. Now, MPC is the master and Cubase is a slave. Because when I hit record in Cubase, it waits until I press Play Start on MPC. So that's great.

One more thing. I would like to record that MIDI, then use MIDI out to play it back from MPC and record it as an another audio track in Cubase. Then mute all MIDI and use only that separate audio tracks. When I synced it through MIDI Time Code, I could not hit Record Enable in Cubase.

Matter of fact, is that even possible?

Edit:

No Record Enable button is caused by no input. Cubase switched it off itself. So when I run Cubase, I can hear clicks and record MIDI, but when I add an audio track, it won't record. When I set my input back in VST connection I can't hear clicks anymore and audio isn't able to record, too.
