latency

i use an old oxygen 8 with my MacBook. It has 4GB of Ram too.

i plug my oxygen 8 directly into the 2nd USB port of my MacBook and my MBOX 2 into the 1st USB port of my MacBook.

when i'm using ableton live i can either use the built in headphone output of my MacBook as a soundcard (28.7 ms of latency) Buffer size 512 or my MBOX 2 as a soundcard (29.4 ms of latency) Buffer size 512.

either way, i can't tell the latency at all. I can boom bap drums, chop, edit and play samples, etc... and it's right on point.

the issue has to be with your m-audio interface.

try using your built in headphone output as your soundcard and see if you get any noticeable latency. if you don't, then you know the m-audio gots to go.

Damn, you don't notice 28-29ms of latency? Lol! I do! It's dope that your stock soundcard performs as well as an actual ASIO soundcard. I'm sure with your computer you can run the lowest buffer with ease. I run my shit in Reason at 128 buffer and the latency is 9ms. Rewired to Pro Tools with the buffer at 64, and it's even lower.

I just looked again, mine is actually running at 14 ms of latency with either the MBOX 2 or my internal soundcard. I was looking at the wrong number.

I don't notice any latency at all with that 14 ms tho. I may have to try to lower the buffer size in ableton to 128 and see what happens.

When i run Pro Tools and cut vocals i take the buffer down as low as it can go. When i mix i bump it back up to 1024.

I wonder how accurate the numbers in the settings are ... because 28ms seems kind of high for him not to notice.... okay if you hitting hihats at 1/16 you may not notice when the hats overlap perfectly with the next one!

Same here. I actually run the lowest buffer when doing any type of production or recording. If I'm tracking directly from Reason, I'll leave the buffer high. But if I'm actually recording notes as I play them, definitely low buffer.

oh I must say, some times I have to bring it up when there is too much stuff going on... not for recording midi notes etc... but lets say you got massive running through a pile of pluggins with knobs being automated.... my machine gets bogged down. My main issue currently is that I dont have enough hard drive space.... which is about to get cleared up. having the system drive full to the top bogs it down quite a bit I find.

Word! That's how it's done! I can usually run my rig at 128 even with a huge plugin filled session, but I still bump it up anyway just to prevent any buffer errors while I'm groovin!

But OT, that "Rambo First Blood" shit you did is dope as ****. That rapper using the funny ass speech impediment voice had me dying! But that beat is **** insane! If you have more shit like that, please submit it to me and Ex!

yeah I loved the first edition as I mentioned.... in fact I still bump that when I have the chance to listen to music. and I been thinking about maybe making something for volume 2.

it's mainly when i just thrash say a key on my midi controller thru logic it might miss a kick or two, i kinda want it to be exact every time

I use a packard bell quad core ,3 gb ram and a roladn edirol ua-25 x and when i have bout 25 channels running load of sidechains and reverbs pumping i get about 60% on the cpu level on ableton 8.

Only one probem ive had is a synth called "A.C.E" by u.he man that's some futuristic pc shit needed to run that.

i run at 102 samples as well so latency isnt a problem

I clock at 1.21 gigawatts.

Did you buy that used? Is that a single core processor? If so, that shit is far behind for music production man, I'd say. I'd say you need at least a dual core. But then again, Pound has an old ass G4 in his studio and it runs perfectly being 10 years old, but G4's were made for that shit. So...

You can try cutting other processes while working on music, like turning off the internet and wifi, turning off your wireless card, close all other applications, defrag your harddrive to name a few. I had a 3GHz single processor computer when I first tried running Pro Tools and that shit was not having it. I couldn't play instruments. I'd be lucky to make it through recording a whole verse without the shit giving me a buffer error. So your issue is probably hardware related. Might be time for a new Mac!

I jus bought new parts for my computer couple days ago

Setup now is a i7Pentium Quad Core, 2.93ghz, Asus P7P55 Motherboard, 6gb of Ram, 800gigs diskspace, RME HDSP 9652 soundcard, running Win7Enterprise 64bit.
Only software I use is Wavelab and Cubase. No latency issues at all everythink works really good so far
