doing a proper sysex transfer

Hi,

is it possible to play a midi dump on the mpc and by that flash a device?
I got a midi controller where I need to transfer a midi file to, sadly I dont have midi on my computer.

he means update the firmware on his midi control using a sysex dump. I don't think you can do it,...

He's talking about sysex (MIDI system exclusive) dumps. Basically, any manufacturer of MIDI gear can extend the MIDI specification to do practically anything he can think of using sysex messages.

You can do stuff like backup all the patches from your HW synth or effects box (or load new ones in), edit parameters (which is how editors like AK.Sys and Emagic SoundDiver work), update the operating system on your device (which it sounds like that's what dude wants to do), and other things. MIDI sample dump in old school samplers is a (slow as hell) way of transferring samples using sysex.

The MIDI implementation chart in the back of the akai manual says it can transmit and receive sysex. Its worth a try.

aaaah, yeah, I totally failed to make the connection, as for "midi file" I was thinking of an SMF not a sysex dump

thnx for the reply, i did just loaded the file and pressed play, but it looked like nothing happend on the controller.
Is there a specific speed or other settings i missed?
btw. im using jjos 1/2xl.

still trying, i created different midi files and activated some settings in the jjos midi menu,
and played that track at 30bpm, but still it didnt flash the device

I think the mpc will record sysex from it's midi in port, and trasmit via midi out, but I don't think you can simply open it from the file browser, if there was a way you could convert sysex to a standard .mid file, it will play that from the sequencer

you must make sure that the device is in sysex dump receive mode. and of course you have midi cable connected.
ok so is there EXCLUSIVE 10Bytes or similar in the step sequence menu?? there are probably these and control changes 98-101 for NRPNs. if its a sytem dump or similar it should have few of these in the step sequence window.
ok so highlight one of these EXCLUSIVE 10Bytes and then HIT WINDOW.
your now editing sysex. be very carefull you dont change it, other wise reload. DO NOT hit F2 - as is a checksum function thing, dont hit it.

see F5 button that says send, hit that. any response from your machine you are trying to update. The machine has to be getting midi and some machines have a sysex bulkdump transmit recieve mode. so make sure that machine is in recieve mode when you hit F5. This will send this bit of sysex. might not be enough to change anything so try a few of them...get back to us about it. there will be

when I open that file there are no notes or anything, does that mean im already lost?

yes i did read that, thats why I m saying that there is no data at all shown.

How can I open that file in a different way than with the filebrowser?

Is the sequence window view set to ALL EVENTS i.e.

Hmmmmm, I have my mpc Autoload nothing when it starts up and all tracks are empty, so that way i know if anything loads when i open a midi file. But if you load your midi file is there any new tracks that appear, when you load the file? There are alot of tracks check every one it might be loaded on track 16 or something. if not then midi file might be corrupted.
