The samples I choose and what I do to them define my sound, so you see me telling you is pretty irrelevant to your music.
As for digging being expensive, I don't know where you live but here in the UK there's an abundance of charity shops where you can pick up thousands of second hand records on the cheap. £1 an LP bargain bin ****, but grab a handful one weekend and I promise you with a keen ear and some creativity you will find something useable.
Secondly, ask around locally I bet there's loads of residents who wouldn't mind letting you have some of their old wax that they've replaced with CDs over the years.
Join your local library they will be full of albums you can borrow and search through.
Newspapers are full of free CDs, my nana always saves them for me, and it's always excellent stuff like Nat King Cole.
Why don't you look online for some open source music to sample? Or some out of copyright material for some really interesting results?
Why don't you sample from more redundant mediums? MiniDisc, Tape, etc... You can even sample from DVDs and VHS tapes.
Honestly I defy you to not be able to find something to sample on the cheap dude.
I respect that, there is ALOT I know I still need to learn. lol I havent seen any local newspapers in my area handing out free CD's, but I will look into it.
I see/understand where you're coming from, at first it just seemed like "

Oh No, not another n00b " but I feel you man. guess I'm just getting frustrated but I'll crawl before walking.
