Barring the sounds.............

Which of the 3 BIG workstations out on the market(Triton Extreme, Yamaha Motif ES, Roland Fantom X) compares to asr10 in regards to sampling/effects? ???

none. but those machines are more practical

I've got both ASR-10R & ASR-X. I pretty much sample in the 10 edit kit into it and then (if it's a drum kit) load it in da X! I though X sound louder then the 10! What's good with the ASR-10R, it comes with SCSI digital I/O and the 8 out...
Guys always talk bout ASR's wack sequencer, sure ya betta record seq with ya MP! But I notice that once you've get your sound readdy in the ASR (talk bout the X) I can done a seq faster on it than on my MP. This s**t is just to easy to work with (I never read the X's manual). I def redo my sequence on my MP but I though idéas just come faster with my sound bank already inna it.
Perhaps may I try the Flash Rom on my 2KXL... but it damn expensive!
I also think ASR-X sound louder then MPC2KXL (not the 10, but both ASR's filtrz are warmer) untill you have your OWN tricks to sample loud in your MP ! Even better if you've got the EB-16!
I finally would say, use both MPC&ASR, and if you can, add a 12bit sampler to up ya game!

I also have an ASR-X (with my ASR-10 and MPC2Kxl). The ASR-X is terribly under appreciated. The ASR-X is easy to get on and create (I also have the Planet Urban expansion to give me more internal sounds). I usually take the ASR-X when I'm touring. The sequencer on all three rate the same for me (with the MPC being the easiest). Newbies spend more time complaining about the ASR sequencer, yet many of them have never really tried to use it (most are bandwagon raters, dick-riding hardcore MPC users' complaints...get your own opinion you loser...LOL..no offense, just tired of whinny-assed beat-geeks).

PS. You can also drop the bit rate on the ASR-X for 12-bit sounds

Into both machines...chopped the samples as close to the same as I could and recorded the same 2 bar pattern. Right off the bat, the asr let me do so much more......I took out any bass that was in the high hat instantly....you cant do that on the mpc...unless you use the 8 outs and a mixing board. The sequences were the same in the end....(MPC was easier to nail what I wanted tho) BUT the asr sounded so much more authentic...I played with the filters, effect and everything....The mpc could not compare, I kinda felt sorry for it. LOL.

The asr-10 sequencing is easy and flawless if you know how to cut your samples properly. Ill admit the swing on the mpc's is very nice, but if you have any sort of talent you can play that .... out. You dont need a machine to do it. The best part about the sequencer is you can have it play and be molding your samples at the same time....The mpc you have to stop...mod..play ..stop ...mod play....ASR-10...you can adjust the pitch/edit stop-start/filter/envelopes all while your song is playing...Editing is a breeze without seeing the wav..I have no complaints. The sound of this machine is second to no other. Effects are amazing, being able to resample any sound thru the effects is dope. The time stretch takes forever but it sounds good.

I tried the asrx-pro. I think its better off as a paper weight. The Mpc series are ill for sequencing (the best out, IMO), and playing the pads for drums is nice. But the sample engine is garbage (MINUS the 60...it sounds so crazy). Otherwise the MPC's cant hang as a all in one unit. again, IMO.

I have Midi'd up my asr to the mpc for a few tracks, but its not worth it...I can get the same seq. on my asr alone.

What about the sample engine on the 3000??/ a littler better (warmer and
bassy) than the MPC 2000xl don't cha think?????

Just remind the advertisement when it comes out...
"Ensoniq ASR-X is the pro alternative to the Akai MPC 3000"
I really feel it guys... Not have the MPC pad's feel but a lot more!
More Mo space, a powerfull FX board, great filters and so on...
I never own a 3K,but I know the S3000 and it's the similar engine and I feel like ASR (10 or X) sound way better.
I like my 2KXL to death :D , but Akai's aren't the best samplrz out there in sound quality term.
Just my opinion as user...
Peace!

asrx better than a 3000? i dare you to post this in the 60/3000 forum. the sound is different(better?) on the ensoniq boards but the mpc has it beat w/ the seq. if i had to pick just one it be mpc. ive had an asr and i kept the mpc. im not trying to incite a riot i think the asr is a great sampler but the sequencer is chunky butt mud.

The ASR-x is not based on the ASR-10/88 family.
The ASR-x is the MR-series with sampling added. It's does not use the same sampling engine as the ASR-10.
Ensoniq thought the most cost effective way to design the unit was the MR's architecture since it already contained the features they were after minus the sampling.
To modernize the ASR-10 architecture would have been a bigger job since it lacked standard seq intergration, couldn't use the exp cards etc.
Not a bad idea but they also chose to use a modern sampling engine instead of the on in the ASR-10 since it would make for simpler intergration.
If you listen the sampling and effects in the ASR-x sound different from the ASR-10's.
Better or worse is a personal opinion.
Kinda like the MPC60 compared to MPC3000 neither is bad but people have their preference.

might i add, the eps16++ is more similar to the asr 10, same sampler engine, effects etc

By ntalec Sun Sep 19, 2004 6:32 pm
All thing I think they did wrong when the went from EPS16+ to the ASR-10 was got rid of the 7 different sample rates.
The ASR would have killed with that option.

8) 8) sorry for 3000's usrz I would say sound "different" :D :D !!!
Neva diss a 3000's addict man    !!!

No doubt, a 3000 is sweet, but a upgraded 60 is just so d**n tasty.

I had an EPS-16+ (a preemptive on the ASR) and loved the sound and the way you could change the start/end points on a sample WHILE the sequencer was running. Something a 2000/1000 can't do ((can a 60 or 3000 do this?) But as incurablebeatlust said the sampler rocks while the seq sucks. Good sound bad sequencer.

Also you should be forewarned that EPS and ASR heat up incredibly. Be careful, I suggest studio use only. Many live gigs I've had the EPS froze up on me. It may have been just my machine, but I've heard this from other peoples. Leave that mug on for an hour and touch the grate on the back HOT.
