HD access via USB so sloooowwwww (1.0 ?)

It took 8 hours to copy 20GB audio from my PC HD to my MPC2500 recently added HD via USB. What the hell is that ? The memory card access via USB is faster. Maybe the HD access is in USB 1.0 mode ? Anyone experienced such thing ? Even for deleting a folder it drives me crazy, take about 1 minute to do such thing that should be 1 sec.

Thats because the 2500 is really MPC1000 (pre 2003 technology) with a few extra features.
To back-up that much info (and avoid USB-1), remove the hard-drive and mount it directly to your computer. There is a device that can easily do this with hard-drives with multiple connections (SATA, IDE, etc) but I forget the name of it.
OR, remove anything you don't need, or install a smaller hard-drive. I have 100gb installed, but I would HATE to back-up that much info. If you get a 8gb drive, you can back-up what you need much faster, and on 2 DVD's! I'm seriously thinking about reducing the size of my HD for this same reason.

I know this isn't the answer to your problem but it's an idea. I knew that transfering large amounts of files back to and from a hard drive via usb would take a long time (specially if you're backing up the entire hard drive) so I never upgraded to a hard drive, I upgraded my old 2 gb cf card to a 16gb 233X cf card instead. I use a card reader to connect the cf card to my pc and it's much faster than my old cf card was and it's way faster than keeping the cf card in my 2500 and transfering via it's usb. For a single file or a few files I'll use the mpc's usb but for large file transfers I always connect my cf card to my pc directly. I got this 16 gb cf card about a year ago, maybe there are larger ones available now that might even be faster. Just a thought.

If the CF cards wrote faster, I wouldn't even have a HD in my MPC, BUT the CF writes so slow (and my samples are small!)
Right now, All I use the Compact flash for is backup, or if I make something that is aaight but the sounds are worth saving, I'll put it on the cf.

i have a 40gb internal HD in my MPC. never had a problem with it. yes, usb 1.0 is slow, but i don't back up my entire sample library (since i already have a copy of it on my computer hd), just my projects. takes about 5-10 minutes or so. just let it run in the background while you do something else.

or if backing up a ton of stuff, just start it before you go to bed & let it run overnight. not a big deal.

I have a kingston 8gb X133. It's very fast. Plus if you use a card reader they are generally USB 2.0.

Exactly. I went from an old 2gb Sandisk to a 16gb 233X RiData card (hadn't used this brand before is but it was the biggest cf card I could find at the time at that speed, it's been great). If I keep my cf card in my mpc and use it's usb to transfere files it's still slow; the key is to stay away from the mpc's usb for large transfers so if you're using a hard drive you'll have to either disconnect the hard drive and connect it directly to your computer with one of those hard drive usb adapters like roxstar mentioned before (I got one off ebay for $8 a while back) or just live with the slower speed. I went through all this before but having to remove the hard drive was too much of a hastle for me and the transfer speed was too slow otherwise so the 40gb hard drive I had is just chillin in a drawer now and I use the higher speed card with a card reader instead.

An external usb 2.0 card reader and good cf cards are the reason I've never added a hard drive. It's just that efficient. The only con is having to move the cf card back and forth from the card reader and MPC. But it's still a hell of a lot quicker than usb 1.0 or taking out the hard drive and putting it into an external enclosure.

As simple as that answer was, I have no idea why I didn't think to do this myself. I shoot photography and have the Extreme III in my camera! When I got the 2500 and CF card in 2006, I simply bought the cheapest card I could find. I assumed the slow speed was the fault of USB-1.
Are the faster CF cards as fast or faster than a hard-drive??? I have a 1gb in my MPC that still has plenty of free space. A 4gb would be plenty for me!

To the OP, how fast is your hard drive. You should have at least 7200rpm.
