Tricks for Humanizng hi hats with swing. I not feeling swing

Okay yall. I recently got a 3K and I LOVE its sound. But I heard so much about its swing of course. Im new to making beats live,cause Started on fruity. And never liked the sound or feel of Fruity. But to make a long story short. I can only seem to get a nice boom bap bounce by not quantizing my hats and kicks.

Now I heard people saying to not quantize them to get that natural swing,but with all the talk about the classic MPCs swing I want to see if I can figure out how to get something useable as another tool.

So my questions to yall 3K users is:

1. What are some common settings as far as Earlier or Later,Swing % and shift amount you use on 16th not high hats and kicks?


2. Do you double your tempo and quantize to 16ths or 32nds to get more resolution?


3. How do you do the trick where you use a open hats to make your hats sound more real?

The sound of 3k is definitely nice and "warm". Good beats aren't made though with certain "rules" or same ol' habits. There is no other way to make good beats than to fck with the machine and its settings for each sound. Try different sounds(samples/synths/whatever) and different ways of approach. That way you'll find how you want YOUR beats to sound, piece by piece and sound by sound.

Don't try to follow same paths everybody else walked. Do it your way. There is no shortcuts.

If you want to adjust the "flow of the hihats" I'd say adjust the envelope params and filter settings. By adjusting these settings for each and every sound in the beat you make the sounds talk with each other.

What people say about "natural feel", swing etc. doesn't matter. Do what you want. If you don't know how you want your beats to sound, just like I said, just fck with it. You'll find plenty of nice tricks. What I've noticed, many good things I use in my beats are originally mistakes. The rest is just something I've tried. Something that I didn't think before I recorded a pattern. After this you hopefully realize that thinking outside of the box is the most useful thing when making a beat

After learning to control the machines of your choice, it's just ideas you want to try. That's why I don't want to give you advice like "quantize the hats to 58% later and switch the amount to 2". I don't know your mood, I don't know your samples, I don't know your hi-hat sounds. It depends on everything. You are the one to control it all and find out what works with what.

Put your hi hats on 16 levels, 2nd row from the top, so your hats are not to loud, just a method i use, may sound simple but it works

by the way 16 levels does nothing to the hi hat pad (60 os 2.12)

just make a straight hihat sequence 16th notes. Then so u get a feel for what the swing does to the rhythm of the hats... keep changing the swing bit by bit and press play between each change. listen to the difference 50% is straight the 60's is where it gets nasty (nasty good) try it. then you'll begin to know where to set it per sample, mood, feeling

edit----> take full level off and hit the hat at different velocities (hard, medium, soft) for a more life like feel then go for it with changing the swing bit by bit. see how it sounds as you change.
