Replacing drive in external SCSI

I have two of these CD drives and one of the drives is busted.

They work well with the MPC 2000/2000XL and new drives are expensive, so I am trying to find out if it is possible to swap out the CD drive in one of the casings for a card reader or some other type of storage (or even another CD reader).

I just don't know much about specs and compatibility. Can anyone suggest some drives that I would be able to be put in here and use with the MPC 2000XL via SCSI?

I guess since I don't have the exact specs for the external SCSI casing I am trying to use, then basically what I want to find out is does an external SCSI card reader have the same limitations as an intenal card reader.

I want to put in something like this, but will settle for a reader with less options of cards or whatever.

Why complicate things?
Trash that hideous box and get an internal reader.

Less things to plug in, less likely to go wrong.

I can't say for sure, but I imagine 'limitations' varies from model to model so such a general question might not get results.

that is a glyph enclosure. cd readers and some zips and hard drives wont fit inside the XL.. plus hard drives add quite a bit of extra heat which you dont want.... especially considering you want to keep the heat away from that screen!

inside that drive enclosure it will have the wide scsi cable (50 pin) and you can pop in zip drives and all that good stuff in those. you obviously would need the 5.25 sized ones for it to fit right. the other thing the enclosure has is a molex connector to power the unit.


basically, you should be able to pop in anything with 50 pin scsi.

For smaller dirves (3,5 drives) there are "slot adapters".
I recommend a MO Drive cause they are very stable and its quiet too (you can eject the disk while you create beat so the drive is completely quiet). AFAIK MPC cant read the 640MB disks and above.
I use 230MB disks. The drives have the floppydisk size (3,5) but I bought one of that kind

Thanks for the input and information. Sorry if my details were not enough to provide feedback from. I do not know too much about messing around inside of these machines. I have installed the 8 out on my MPC, but at this point it doesn't seem necessary to go through the effort yet to replace my drive in the MPC (zip in large enough). But since I have this external drive that is compatible I figured I don't mind opening it up and taking a chance on messing it up trying to put in a new drive. I have replaced drives in my computer before, so I figure it should be similar to that.

I guess what I was trying to find out was those details provided about the 50 pin scsi.

If I try to go a route with a card reader put inside this box/housing do I have to change my operating system version on the MPC like I might if it was a card reader internally in the MPC? Or does it not matter because it is external? Right now I am running 1.17 on the MPC 2000XL.

Yeah, 1.17 is my personally hacked operating system, I can play Super Mario Bros. on it in between making beats. Nah my bad I meant version 1.14, I must have missed in typing.

But to use an external card reader would I have to change the operating system from 1.14 to 1.20 like I would if it was an internal card reader?

No you don't have to change the OS.
I prefer using OS 1.14C and it works with my internal SCSI card reader and my external SCSI Card readers, ZIP, JAZ, 9GB hard drive and CD drive.
