NEXT SEQ after something got recorded

Hello,

let's assume I play a live set on my 2000XL, and during play, I want to record some additional percussion or something like that. It's possible to do that, but after that, I can't switch to another sequence anymore. The only way to do it seems to stop playback, which is not good in a continuous live set of course. I guess it has to do with the UNDO-function.

Is there any possible workaround that I have not yet discovered?

I've never experienced this, though I've never tried to do this on purpose, looking for a bug.

Since it seems so basic, and since I've never noticed it, that makes me think this is user error.

1) You hit play-start.
2) You are playing your sequence, you hold down the overdub button and then hit play.
3) Record your new parts.
4) Hit the 'overdub' button again. This will turn off recording.

At that point I think you should be able to do anything you normally can while the machine is playing.

My assumption is that you are hitting stop instead of just hitting the overdub button...do correct me if wrong.

You can't change to another sequence after recording without first stopping the sequencer.
For whatever reason that's just the way it is.

Actually I'm not sure if I hit "overdub" again or really "stop" in step 4 (doesn't the playback stop immediately if you press "stop", even while you're in recording/overdub mode?).
Maybe I'll try that at home again, but I don't think this will make any difference.

@ Pilchard: I think the reason is the UNDO-function, because normally, you have the possibility to undo the last recording, and if you would change to another sequence (maybe accidentally), you would lose that. Of course, I'd also prefer it to be different (it would be really great for live performances), but that's at least a possible reason for it.

My point with hitting the 'overdub' button a second time is that the sequence continues to play, you just exit record mode.
The sequencer does not stop.

You may well be right
There is usually a good reason for these things,crazy as they seem

I just tried it with the 2000classic

No problem with this

1) play sequence 1
2) hit overdub and play to
3) record some extra notes on sequence 1
4) leave the rec mode by hitting overdub again
5) change sequence 1 to sequence 2

sequence 2 is NOT AN EMPTY SEQUENCE. Its not possible to switch to an empty sequence. By sayin empty I mean UNUSED
I also cant turn on the overdub mode again on this (sequence 2)

Have you tried to switch the sequence with the wheel instead of the NEXT SEQUENCE button? (2000classic doesn't have a NEXT SEQUENCE button)

You're right PP, The 2000 classic OS works differently as you say.
I guess it was a change that the Akai bods thought would be better on the XL.

btw. the NEXT SEQ button on the XL also does nothing after recording unless you stop the sequencer first.

That's crazy if the 2000 can do this. Newer models can't even switch seq after recording. Even with the JJ OS.

Well like Peterpiper said, On the classic you can change sequence but it will only play. You cannot record again unless you stop the sequencer first.
This still might be a better option if you were playing out live like the OP.

Thought the XL could do it too. So thats another point for the classic (beside the jog wheel). While the XLs plus is the SHIFT & NV slider chopping and folders to save to

In fact, I currently own both a Classic and an XL

But the main reason I bought the XL was because I wanted to have better live features (track mute and next seq), so I plan to sell the Classic again. But it's sad that this live recording possibility and changing the sequence is not included in the XL anymore

@ peterpiper: Well, the only thing that I prefer about the Classics's wheel is in fact the look and feel. But if you're talking about the "outer ring", I have to say I was kinda disappointed when I learned that it's only for changing the digit in the sample screen (which is possible on the XL as well, just not with the wheel). I initially thought it's also possible to use it for data input.
