Burial's beats

Hi all,

For a few last years I am fascinated by a guy called Burial and his absolutly breathtaking music style. And also for a few last years I am asking myself "oh ****, how is this guy making so stunning beats???")
For someone who don't know, what I am talking about, here is the link to one of his tunes:

Is there anyone who can explain me why are his beats so specific and why are his drumlines so noninterchangeable?
Someone may say that its his style and anyone should find his own style - I must say that I don't want to copy Burial but I just want to understand him and his music - lets say its so. This guy changed the way I listen to the music because this kind of tunes are so so so so specific and something I didn't heard ever before...

Do you know his music? Do you like it or not? What do you think its that what makes it music so specific and full of dark mood and emotions? Have you ever tried to do something like this on your mpc or are you going to?

Yes I like his stuff, and no I don't know how he creates his sound...

Must be an European thing, sounds wack to me. Anyways, as far as his drums being noninterchangeable....um, maybe he makes a lot of drum sequences or a long drum sequence, they sound filtered to me as well as the synths. When I think of dark mood type tracks, R&B music doesn't come to mind. I'm thinking Sid Roams, Alchemist, Havoc..! This sounds like something that got left off of Drakes 'Thank Me Later'.

yes I read somewhere that he is using the soundforge and he is not using the quantization at all to get the btrack such a natural feeling...

hehe yee I don't know ... seems like a nightmare work.. but hey maybe... the result are really different and deep...really love almost all his release.

Exactly he has barely 3-4 tracks I like little bit less than the others...
I like the feeling and mood he has in all his tunes and all that pitched, glitched and cutted vocals and voices giving the track some kind of "message"...

The most original artist to emerge in recent years IMO. He is incredible.

If you sit and listen to his drum work you will notice how detailed it actually is. There's SO much variation, constantly tiny little hits getting thrown around the stereo field that it's hard to actually pick it up, it's so subtle.

I read in an interview he used a lot of hits from computer games, sounds of guns reloading/shells falling etc... which is pretty apparent if you listen closely.

He also puts El-B as one of his biggest influences, and when he first started he was trying to recreate his drums, and on the bits he couldn't work out he patched over with various chunks of white noise/crackle.

What I love most about his tunes is that in an era when everything is so hard hitting and compressed to death an artist can come through like this and turn a genre on it's head. As for the mood he creates, well I have no idea, its just an incredible ear for samples, the textures of the sounds he creates, and the way he processes it all etc... I mean have you heard the vocal processing on Fostercare??? It's f*cking incredible.

But then if you read about his influences it makes so much sense the way his work sounds the way it does... it's got the raw jungle sound, with the syncopation of UKG two-step... etc...

I can't get enough of his work.

Check out his remix of Commix's "Be True" that came out a little while back on their Re:Call to Mind LP... it nearly melted my brain the first time I heard it. Next level.

Also on youtube there's a few unreleased things which are disgusting:

A tune he's done with El-B that I can't remember the name of either but it's got some tasty mid-range bass in it. Also he did a tune with Breakage for his Foundaiton LP called "Vial" which is sick.

that style of drums can easily be reproduced in reason if you use the synths as drums (i.e. subtractor, thor, malstrom) instead of the refills or stock sounds, and trigger them either live with midi controller or though CV with the redrum, then it sounds like a bit of LPF, rv7000 reverb, and a touch a delay, added and tweeked on each drum sound, and not the drum track as a whole. but thats just my take on it. his sample work is what makes his style IMO

but he made it on sound forge! WTF

and so far i think hes the only guy to make a good song using samples from a youtube video

Be True was a dnb tune, he just got asked to remix it as he'd always wanted a track on the Metalheadz label. I don't think he's getting into remixes as such, but I suppose like a lot of artists if the chance comes up and he liked the original/feels he can bring something new to it then I guess he'll do it.

As far as I'm aware he's only done a handful of remixes, although this is including a superb take on Thom Yorke's And it Rained all Night, which is well worth checking out.

Oh don't forget he did those tunes with Four Tet which are great too... Moth / Wolf Club.
