First MPC 2000 Purchase - Looking for Advice

Been months since I last posted due to certain circumstances. In the end I never managed to get want I originally posted about but now I have the chance.

Tomorrow I am going to look at a XL. The seller says its in perfect condition and wants €300 for it.

Specs:

Akai MPC 2000XL
32 mb RAM
ZIP DRIVE
USB ZIP DRIVE
No lines or dead pixels

Is this a decent deal?

i dont know what to say about te busted output... I dont know if that is a mainboard problem or maybe the jack is messed up? Either way after mentioning the fully upgraded mv8000, if you have the time to learn that machine I would for sure say take that. if it has the additional output card and the vga expansion I would say it is the better buy.

Thanks for your reply man. The headphone out and one stereo out is working in the 2000 so maybe its just a soldering issue with the other stereo out. If thats all it is i would buy it as is. Mainly due to the fact that ive always wanted a 2000.

Regarding the MV. Yes it has the output expansion and vga expansion. It also comes with a 20" Monitor.

As I say the 2000 would be my preference but if theres something wrong with it, it might end up costing me the same as the MV and i think thats a lot for a 2000 especially after some of the quality 2k's ive seen on eBay recently going from between 250-360$

I would take that MV and learn it inside out!!

Wow this is interesting I def would have thought everyone would have said get the 2k. My only concern with the MV is that it will sound too ''clean'' if that makes sense? I do have a soft spot for the 'dirtier' sound of the 2k and I know that drums will also sound better on it. As a drummer thats a big factor for me. Im going to have to have a big think about this. My head says the MV but my heart says the 2k. I wish I had never seen that MV haha

I dunno if I could put it this way but if you offered me an brand new iPod or 15 year mini-disc id pick the MD. why? sound quality and the hands on feel

Thats funny becasue I was an avid minidisc user also. The MV is a serious tool also and even though I own an MPC, If I could get a deal like that one - I would get it and then still stack some chips until I could add an MPC to the line up!

i think you can find a fully working mpc for the same price nowadays...

Haha MD all the way! Thanks Krush im going to contact the guy about MV see what he has to say. As much as I love the 2000 I know that if either the LCD or Mainboard is faulty its going to cost me a hell of a lot more than even a XL. As you say stack some chips the right one will creep up some day

yeah the 2000 isn't really dirtier then the mv... okay they are different but it isn't a world of difference like say the 60 compared to the mv.

the thing is, either way you look at it, the 2000 is just not worth it when you got that price for that mv (supposing there is nothing wrong with the mv)

the 2000 is broken and you wont actually know what the problem is until the purchase and you start spending time and money working on it. who even knows if it is fixable. then you have to think.... how the hell did something like that break in the first place?

once that is said and done, the 2000 isn't one of the land mark mpc models... it requires a boot disk just to turn it on (the only model with that issue) unless you have the rare and expensive f-rom expansion.....

when you look at what potential strengths it may have over the 8000 there are only a few... better pads (which is not a huge deal), a better jog wheel (it has that advantage over the rest of the series), easier to learn because it has WAY less features and things it can do...


downsides: 15 times less ram, potentially the screen could go at any time which the fix is more then a new mpc, less effects supposing you have the eb16 and even if you did the mv's effects are quite a few steps up, boot disk required, no IDE like the xl has, cant read directories within hard drive space supposing you have an external scsi drive, and more.



now, it is still up to personal preference... you may very well find the 2000 to be enough and just that perfect piece of kit that does not too much yet all the things you need for your vinyl sampling area of the studio.... so really you gotta make the choice... but if you need the most bang for your buck the mv is probably the best bet.

Ive been told that the jack is just loose so as you said that'd be an easy fix. But if not mono will do until i get the 8 out. If its good enough for The Beatles then its good enough for me! If floppy is good enough for Damu then thats good enough for me haha. Thanks man

that would be the move right there... sell the one that aint working for you or learn both and keep both.
