which one 2000xl or 2500?

I have never had to use their support, so I really can't say. But the majority of serious katz on this forum agree that it sucks!

Damn, I'm kind of stuck. I have heard mostly negative things about their support too. Geez, I don't know if I should get the classic/reliable 2000XL or the improved/features but less reliable 2500?

I know that any 2500 can have its issues and I know I'm making a big deal out of this but sh*t,, I just don't wanna shell out $800 on ebay for used 2500 and have problems later on. Perhaps I'll end up with a 2000XL,, who knows.

Quick question tho, where do you store your songs or drums on the 2000XL? (I'm pretty sure u use the zip disks, which would bring me to my next question. How much would a typical song take up on a zip disk? (I've seen these 100mb zip disks.) With the 2500, I can see myself storing most of my songs/drums on the Hard drive but I really don't how would I go about this on the 2000XL.

Well, I used to have a floppy drive for mine, then I bought a zip drive, now I have a cf reader. Thing about the XL, you can build em up wth a shit ton of options.Plus, theyre easier to build up than the 2500, whos only 3 options are cd burner, hard drive and RAM

Remember, MPC2500 has a CF reader, it is not an option but a stock feature.

My point is, you don't really have to build up the MPC2500 at all - RAM upgrade is nice, though.

But if you enjoy juggling with floppies, Zip disks, scsi drives, just go ahead. I much prefer CF cards. And USB connectivity is somewhat useful, too.

Not true, to the 2000xl statement. there are aftermarket upgrades to put a cf card in a 2kxl. I have a 16gb one in mine, no need for harddrive. Plus the 2000xl build quality kicks the shit outta the 2500. But the 2500 aint a bad machine, even if it does lack customization options

2500 all day, every day.

Bigger screen with better tilt, everything built in as standard, more useable effects (compressor for example), USB connectivity, more filters, loads of sample time, more neutral sound, the best chopping (with JJ) of ANY MPC ever made, coupled with an OS that is constantly being updated and refined... need I go on??

If you value simplicity go for the XL, if you want more control get the 2500.

two little letters make this decision an easy one:

"J" and "J"

i guess that's not so much 2 little letters as it is 1 big one.
buy a used 2500, fix what needs fixing, learn something about soldering, and you will keep your 2500 running for ages.

i got an original mpc 1000 in 2004, old pads, etc
replaced the data wheel 2x
replaced several tact switches
replaced the pads
hell, even replaced the Qlink board.

it's all dead easy. not to mention, that kind of stuff is gonna need to get done to the 2000, too
given how easy it is to modify this stuff i'm surprised moer people haven't added extra buttons, or external screens, or improved boards/button layouts. the extent of the "customization" i've seen here has been questionable paint jobs, stickers, and (dope) wooden sidepanels.

i thought hip hop producers were supposed to be innovators, brave, reckless and rulebreaking...the electronica crowd has yall looking like powdered wig wearing gavel crackers

In the 2000xl's case, why fix what aint broke? BTW, the jog wheel on the 2500 is madd annoying

don't need to be broke to get improved. look at the wold of automobiles, or computers.

but rotary encoders are rotary encoders
someone with a 2500 needs to just find out the specs and drop something else in. it'd be a hack but if it was a piece that could be bolted to the faceplate / connected to the PCB internally it'd be extremely solid.

you can even build a rotary encoder out of a IR mouse and a circular piece of paper w/ white and black stripes.

and you know what... I am surprised nobody got that 2000 jog wheel happening in the other models yet.. haha even though that would be complicated but like you were saying improving what aint broke just for the fun of it.

Well forget it, I ended up getting a 2500 off ebay almost brand new for 663!

I've been playing with it for a few weeks now and I gotta say I LOVE IT! Love the sequencer and how simple/intuitive it is. The CF Card slot is a dream. Transferring files is a breeze. I'm using the 1.24 OS and so far I haven't encountered any bugs at all so I'm happy. Gonna try the JJOS later. I'd recommend the 2500 to anyone if u can get it for a reasonable price.
