Sooo,I bought the s3000xl and harvested the screen.Mating connectors ARE the same, but wont do without some soldering action.
Now the screen doesn't work.Backlight is fine but when i start the machine the screen is blank. After adjusting backlight contrast i can see 3 vertical white lines on the left right and center.
Checked the connections, soldering was clean not connecting with other elements.PUZZLED...

Any ideas?Help would be much appreciated

Are both Screens the exact same? I am just thinking of the possibility that the wire connections are different. Just something worth checking. Can you get the s3000 close enough to plug the cable back in to that to see if the screen still functions on that?

Hi,thanks for reply.

Yes,just plugged the screen back into 3000xl and it works fine.So assuming from that soldering is fine and the problem lies in mpc.I am pretty convinced the screens are the same.

I know the situation isn't quite detailed, but any ideas?

Are you certain the screen is getting voltage from the MPC 3000? Check the voltages on the pins of the LCD to make sure it is getting power. There is a 33 Ohm resistor on the CPU board at R8 that sometimes blows causing the display not to power. This resistor is slightly raised on the board from the other components.

Also, make sure the ribbon cable is oriented in the correct direction.

Hey MPCHunter

Thanks for advice,Your tips got me buying the akai s3000xl and again You're helping me out, much appreciated.

Will get the voltage meter tomorrow to check if the screen is getting power from the mpc.Do You know that if its a blown resistor which U mentioned,is it hard/expensive to replace it?

As well what do You mean by ribbon cable orientation? It is definitely connected to the screen the proper way and the other end snaps into the mpc as it should.Do You mean the way it is bending or folding?I am still testing it with the machine open so didn't put the screws in.

Little observation, when the screen is connected to the mpc the backlight shines and works but no info or any display on the screen apart from 3vertical lines occasionally (positioned far left-center-far right),when the contrast/brightness is turned to the max. When I connect the screen to akai s 3000xl the display works and everything is displayed(menus etc) but the backilght doesnt switch so its dark.

Hey,

So the Backlight power/connection cable is just the small grey 2 wire (black and white). The other ribbon cable connection is the actual information cable that will show the data on the screen. Just confirming this is plugged in properly correct? So your problem lies within that cable and connection. I am pretty sure that cable can only go in 1 direction but it might be possible that the wire on the s3000 screen is backwards for some reason... Hard to say without seeing it!

If you can post a few pics of how the screen is hooked up in the mpc3000 when it has the lines as you say that would be helpful! You could always email one of us them if you dont want to post them.

The reason why you don't get the backlight when its plugged into the s3000 is the MPC3000 is connected and controlling the backlight being on/off still.

The part number for the resistor is in the service manual. It will likely cost more to ship it than what the part sells for. Forat/VST/MPCStuff may have these in stock. It is possible to substitute a similar resistor if you get the wattage right.

If you look at the connector on the board there should be some numbers silkscreened next to the connector showing which pin is pin 1. The LCD screen should have these same markings too. Pin 1 on the MPC should connect to Pin 1 on the LCD.

Make sure the cable is not put on backward connecting the wrong pins. Don't assume since it snaps into place that the connectors were installed on the LCD correctly.

Hey Guys thanks for the effort and help!

Still didn't get the voltage meter so don't know if the mpee is givin the screen power.

I ve noticed as MPCHunter advised that the pattern of cables on the connectors differs slightly between 3k and 3kxl.Getting the soldering kit tomorrow and will flip them.

So once again Im gonna switch the single little cords.

@MPCHunter
I ve checked service manual and it might be my misinterpretation but the map goes to K8 and U ve mentioned R8.Pretty confused about where that resistor is,are You able to direct me to it on these pics?

Your problem is NOT with the 2 wires (black & white) in the grey jacket!

I would look at the wire orientation on the other multi wire plug. As the wire colors are different make sure you look at the orig MPC screen and trace wire for wire that the new wired plug is in the correct order. So where it is marked "1" on the big white Plug end it goes back to witch pin on the screen... Pin 2 etc. Make sense? I can see the wires are not in the right order. If u check and fix that I bet it will be working perfectly!

Also it would be a good idea to get some heat shrink tubing to keep the soldered pin ends on the screen side from shorting out on each other.

Yessir

Thanks for the tips Eastwood.

This will be done on days when I'll get the proper soldering kit.

Will share the outcome,so in touch:)

eastwood is on point. Make sure you soldered the correct wires into place. Pin 1 goes to Pin 1. Pin 2 goes to Pin 2... Pin 10 goes to Pin 10.

R8 is directly above the P4 connector on the main CPU board. P4 is the ribbon cable for the LCD plugs in. The resistor is clearly labeled R8. You can't miss it.

So after such a long time the situation is stuck at the same point.
Wires are soldered correctly,ie cable 1 on the screen corresponds to pin 1 on the mpc, etc(all the 10 cables match the pattern on the other end).
The resistor is checked and fine.
Still puzzled cause when I reconnect the screen back to Akai 3000xl with the same cable it works fine.
The resistor is working.
Anybody has any other ideas?I pretty much gave up for the time being. Will have some money soon so without suggestions I will give it to Cimple Solutions

Some questions:

What was the problem with the original display, and can you verify that the old display is defective by hooking it up to the S3000XL, if the connector fits? (ignoring the backlight for now)

Also, does your MPC appear to be working properly apart from the display issue, i.e. do the correct LEDs illuminate normally / does it respond to keypresses?

And can you confirm that both of the displays have the marking 'NANOX' and 'NFM 243' on their circuit boards?

This is an old thread!

What resistance did you get when you measured the resistor at R8?

Are you getting the correct voltages coming from the power supply?
