Sound slice

Can anyone explain how I slice a sample and put it on 16 pads?

I have done this but I have been working on a track and then sliced a sample then when I play my sequence it play this sliced sample instead of my beat, bass etc. In the pattern I have already laid down. Do I need to select another bank for it to play on if so how do I do this? pleez!

Get the sound that you want to use and go to an empty bank.(A,B,C,D).Hit the 16 levels button and turn it on to whatever you need.(filter etc.)Then you can play the pad like a keyboard because your sound will spread over all 16.

if i am thinkin correct you need to have those sliced samples on a seperate program, from tht of your drums. on a seperate track.

so for e.g drums on track, pgm 1
sample on track 2 pgm 2
i always have my samples on diferrent pgms from my instruments.

Thanx guys but I dont think I explained myself very well there, I will try again.

What I was trying to say was:

Because I am new to this I have been working with sequences on their own so for example I will sample a beat and lay down a four bar sequence using the beat alone. Then I will copy that sequence and add a bass line then I will copy that sequence and add a stab sample. So I end up with 3 sequences, I have not been working with tracks because I figured I could just use sequences then use them to create a song in song mode. This has been working fine for me for the meanwhile.

The problem I am having is when I am in say one of the sequences and I sample a sound from one of my decks then go into zone> sound slice>create new program>yes. What happens is, what ever I have laid down on the seqeunce I am working with disappears and it will play this sound sliced sample instead of my original beat ,bass ,sample etc. Then I have to go into programs and re assign all my samples back to where they were. Is there anyway when you sound slice a sample you can assign it to say bank B over all 16 pads as I cant see the option anywhere, it seems to default to the A bank.

I hope this makes sense and thanx for your time if you can help me.

Whatever you record you record to a track. The track is then played back in the sequence. Think of it like a 100 meter dash, all of the runners (sounds) are on the same course (sequence) but they all run in different tracks (track). What you are doing now is that you're cramming all of the runners on the same track.. Not that there's nothing wrong about it, it's just a hell of a lot easier to keep each of them on a separate track.

Just look at your screen and you should see the track+ and track- on the bottom. Just press the corresponding button under the screen to change the track.

As for the slice problem, I don't know how to answer that. I rarely use that function myself.

I don't use the xl, so don't have this feature. However, from your description, when you say you go into:

zone> sound slice>create new program>yes

....perhaps if you say "no" at the end it either puts those slices into your current program, or doesn't assign them to a program at all, in which case you can manually add them to your current program on whatever pads you want?

As for what Cheech says about putting things on different tracks...yes, you really should use those tracks. Start today! Imagine if you want to delete or move a single bass note. If you know that the bass line in on track 5 it is easy to find that note going through track 5 in step mode. If every different thing is crammed onto track 1 you've got to scroll through loads of information, & if you are wanting to edit that note because lots of other sounds fall on the same beat..... well, you have made life difficult for yourself.

what featherboy is saying is right. when you slice a sample and create a new program ur sequence is gone. so like feather boy said say no to creating a new program the mpc will still slice the sound but it will not assign the slices u have to do that manually. i was having the same problem a while ago.

Thanks again, I will try and slice without creating a new program then go into programs and assign from there. Though I did get quite a good effect when I just created another program last time.

I dont know if i can explain this properly but i know what your problem is...

when u sliced your sound, it created a new program and automatically puts that program in DRUM 1.

Now all of your other sounds are in DRUM 2.

All you have to do is switch them back or change all of the other tracks to drum 2 and voila...

did that make sence??
